Last night around midnight one of my Granddaughters (Lives with us) was walking through a small Park/ Play area with a (Boy) friend.
Unmarked car pulled up and two females emerged and approached the kids….we’re police these are our numbers and this (Waving lanyard with something on end credit card sized) is our authority to stop and search you because you are acting suspiciously.
Checked down their socks and in their trouser waistbands, then they gave them a ticket to take to a police station in case they want a report on the action taken, then bade them goodnight.
Does anyone know if this is an okay procedure, like, is walking through a play area (About 35 mtrs x 40 mtrs.) surrounded by houses and a B road considered acting suspiciously enough to warrant being S&S?
Sarah Everard came to mind.
I will be accompanying her to police station.

Sounds above board, as long as they had genuine suspicion and grounds for that.
 
Sounds perfectly fine.

They probably would have been told a little more than "acting suspiciously" but even then depending on what crimes are being committed in and around the area at the time and what they were wearing that would have been enough for reasonable circumstances.

On whatever leaflet they've been given they will have details to obtain a copy of the search details which may reveal more if you're still unsure.
 
I don't think so, the police need to be able to reasonably articulate a crime they suspect them of before stopping and searching, we don't live in a police state. Did the police have body worn cameras? if so request a copy of the interaction, they should have been told at the first available opportunity that they were being recorded if so.

You won't be given a copy of the footage and nor do they have to state that you're being recorded.

Most of the cameras have a sticker on them saying words to that affect and that is legally sufficient. That doesn't mean they wouldn't have been told but they don't necessarily have to of been told.

I thought it was best practice to tell any member of the public that the police interact with at the first available opportunity verbally that they are being recorded unless the police are going hands-on to apprehend someone that is as soon as they walk up to them.
I'm sure there is a procedure in place to formally request a copy of the video footage the police have taken.
But I'm no expert. Every policeman interprets the law in their own way, and it's not always the correct way, far from it, plenty of folks put a claim in for wrongful detention/arrest and win compensation.
 
Yeah it's best practice but like you say circumstances dictate if/when it does get said and if it doesn't it's not exactly the end of the world.

I don't know if it's just me, but when my son and daughter are old enough to go out.. I'd rather them be stop/searched every night if it means they're doing the same to everyone and catching the little pricks wondering round with machetes and rambo knives in their tracksuits.
 
They should have been told…

Grounds for the stop
Objective of the search
Shown a warrant card if not in uniform
Identity of the officer
Station the officer belongs to
Entitlement to a copy of a search record
Legal power being used
Told they’re being detained

From what the OP says, all of that seems to have been given.
No need to tell people they’re being recorded by body camera.

No it's not just you,if you have nothing to hide why object to being searched, were they acting suspicious only they and the police know the answer to that, I have kids and grandkids and great grandkids and I know that they don't always tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, though.my great grandkids are a bit young to be acting suspicious or telling fibs well on second thought's maybe not though they are only six and one lol
Seriously I don't think it's anything to get overly excited about, maybe something happening in the neighbourhood and the police are checking all young people that they encounter at night.

Watch the officer crumble @ min 5.00 that he was recording but failed in the forces policy lol

Yep, so reading that if you are a lawful citizen and haven't committed a crime you can just carry on walking and say nothing.. You don't have to give your name or details, and if they detain you without setting out why you have the grounds to you can make a claim against them.. plenty of YouTube Auditors have done it scores of times, their reasoning is to educate the police into what they can get away with and what they can't. It's amusing viewing.

There’s a lot of people with nothing to hide, but you
ask ‘em if they’d by happy to carry ID and they don’t like that idea.

Ps. This is the first instance our family and friends have heard about someone in town being stopped & searched. (Not a hundred metres from home.)
I know that doesn’t mean it’s not been happening but it just took us by surprise.
