Shooting sticks for DSC2

Hi Everyone,

This may be an odd question. I may be doing my DSC2 soon. Is there any consensus regarding sticks? I know that some of the assessors may have opinions/preferences regarding shooting sticks but would it mater if I use quads or tripod (like the Primos one) or a extensible bipod (see pic)?

I think you just stalk as you normally would.
If you usually use sticks, use them.

It doesn’t matter what you use as long as they are serviceable and you can use them. The AW is there to tick boxes and not teach or preach!

Use what you are stalking with as you need to keep all your kit familiar with the lightly hood you will be only making one shot.
If it is not broken then don't fix it.

Take both 2 or 3 and just explaining YOU feel it supports a firmer better humane shot you tried loads and settled on these your there to produce, stalk and cull a deer to compliance a better shot is a better shot use what you are good with and don’t get flustered you’ll do fine

The eICR has just been revised - here is the link to the latest version, current as of July 2024:

This is the what the AW will be looking to observe with regards to Performance Criteria 1.4, related to the kit you need:

“Candidate shows possession of equipment and tools necessary for stalking and assessment.”

This is the guidance given to the AW for the same:

“Candidate’s are asked to show they have the necessary equipment enabling them to carry out the PC’s contained within the ICR.”

So use whatever you normally use when stalking - a single stick, twin sticks, tripod, quad-sticks, whatever! There’s actually nothing to stop your shooting off-hand, if that’s what you normally do - just remember that you will still need to check for eye-blink reaction when you approach the deer after a successful shot.

Don’t worry about kit, other than making sure you have what you need to achieve all the Performance Criteria.

Instead of adding a new tool , swat up and practice on targets . Any change to your shooting gear will need to be a new unknown, not the best plan . Besides how if your one beast wont get shot off a Harris Bipod or fence post top

Stalk as you would normally. Be able to justify you choices.
Don’t change anything from your normal set up, you’ll be nervous enough.

Turn up, shoot your identified cull beast, take it from beast to carcass safely, write a brief debrief then have a phone debrief. Easy.

Essentially the AW is watching you stalk as you normally do, but under "exam conditions".
Do what you usually do.

I did mine 2 years ago just turn up like you would for any stalking day .they could ask you a few simple questions and then you will stalk in the normal way . find your deer shoot your deer ,its at that point the fun starts .just try to enjoy it .
