Quad winch

Hi all

Looking for info in regards to adding a winch to a Honda TRX 500 quad.
It's a 2020-21 model.

Ideally something that can be used to drag red deer from say 100 yards if that is even possible (this is new to me so be gentle if I'm being stupid).

I'd imagine a winch plate would be needed to attach the winch to the quad, or can it be attached to the ball hitch?

Any information would be much appreciated

Thanks

I recently fitted a Rhino 3000kg to the front of my KLF. Simplicity itself, although I did need to fit a mounting plate. Easy enough though. You might struggle with 100m though? I think mine holds around 10m of 5mm steel cable. You'd maybe get more on the same drum with synthetic rope though 🤔

And if you have oversize tyres on the front you may find it fouls. Mine did, so I had to revert to stock sizes

Yes I've heard on Dinema (think that's what it's called) line.
Thin but very strong and you can get a fair amount on a spool as far as I am aware.

That's the stuff! Dyneema. Damned if I could remember the name! I plan to swap mine out as it's already started to kink in places.

Another thing I did was to fit an isolator switch to the battery feed. As the winch runs off a handlebar switch or remote control I didn't want to risk it accidentally running and either causing a jam or a tangle

Thanks mate.
All great information.

I would say with such a small unit also lack of spool length the motor will get hot, fitted lots of big winches on artic low loaders/beaver tail lorry's.
If you use a drag tray then it will make for a better pull, but 100 yds is a big ask for a chinky motor.
catch up tomorrow
Tim

Yes we will have a drag tray
It's getting the deer to the quad in the first place. Tiz a bit rough out there.

Speak tomorrow mate 👍

And don't forget the motor pull gearing with a 100 yds of cable on board. Any pull, even say 10 yds will require lots of cable out to get the appropriate gearing.
A full drum is like setting off in 5th.
An empty drum is like setting off in 1st.

Your choice?

I put the the superwinch terra 25 on mine with dyneema rope on it. It just needed a plate to go within the recess on the Honda trx420. I put an isolator on the back. The reason I went smaller with the 25 was to not put too much on the battery and flatten it.

As said mate. All new to this so the more information the better 👍

How much line would that winch take then?

Sound advise on the battery front 👍

I don’t know what it would take but it came with 50ft synthetic on it. I fitted it purely to help get the quad out of a sticky place or two with the help of ground anchors but I have used to pull reds from awkward spots along both an extra length of rope in the quad box.

Many years ago I was on a 4x4 challenge event. One of the top guys there had a Warn 8274 the same as me. However, he had a 150a alternator and some fancy monitoring gear.
Apparently on full load i.e. very stuck, he'd seen a current draw of 550 amps

Something to think about @ColinBr

If winching don't stall the quad or it could be a long walk

Yes as said mate I'm new to this and know it may not even be possible to do what I want to do, but thought I would ask those with far more knowledge on the matter.

I know a lot of guys use quads on far hillier and rougher ground.

I'd gather they do what I'm expecting we will need to do and just grunt it, to get the deer to where we can get the quad into.

At the time (2010) I got a good price on a genuine (made by Warne) Honda winch from the States for a TRX420. It was around 2000lbs if I recall, and it was capable of dragging a red stag, whilst not powerful enough to fold the steel frame. If you go for similar strength of winch with a plate like this:

You can't go too far wrong! :thumb:

Thank you

I will have a good look 👍

The winch is a fantastic tool but must be respected, especially with the hidden forces involved.
Line pull and speed are at opposite extremes- light pull, fast speed.
Heavy pull, VERY slow speed.
The alternator, in all probability, won't keep up i.e. the battery is going flat with the engine running.
Heat build up will be an issue. Lowering, as in winching out when using dyneema, or any synthetic material, will need to be done with care as the heat build up, especially if the winch has in-drum braking will reduce it's load capability massively.
