What Age Devices are People Viewing the SD with?

I'm looking to upgrade the SD software in the not-so-distant future. One feature is to optimise images to .webp format, except older devices, such as Apple from prior to 2020, won't be able to display them.

So my question is what release age/device are you still using?

Cheers,

Alex

My iPad is 5 years old. That is the main device iuse. But, I may upgrade it this year. My samsung is probably 3 years old. I would expect a lot of people using older kit… but we will see.

I would think a lot of folks won't have newer phones to be fair (price on new phones are ridiculous)

I'm not even sure mine is that new. I tend to get 1 on a 2 year deal and then just get it put onto a SIM only deal until the phone is gubbed

My iPad is definitely older

My own phone pro and ipad pro 2024
Work pro phones and i pads 2020 and office back from there 😒

Me too, last phone lasted about 6 years until I left it in a field. lol.

All of my tech platforms were made pre 2020. And I am not tech averse, so I am guessing that most of SD users have even older stuff.

As I understand it, the move to webp [a Google standard to rival JPEG and one that also supports GIF-type animation] is primarily a win for web hosts in that it reduces data storage by 25% for platforms like SD.

Personally, I would vote this down. If the SD subs need to go up to pay for server space, I would prefer that.

[I hate being herded by big tech "innovation" which has a consequence of forcing premature hardware upgrading]

Would it be possible to leave a link to a page that has both JPEG and webp images?

If so, you could do a poll thread: "Did your browser render one or two images?"
The whole point is to optimise the image by converting to webp, not growing the attachments by 2x! :D
