.505 Gibbs, “the long range cartridge”?

Back in the 70’s or 80’s Elgin Gates wrote several articles for Gun World Magazine for several African Safaries he did all in the same trip think he did four or five countries . Anyway one of the places his guns didn’t arrive so he borrowed a 375 H&H a 404 Jeffery and a 505 Gibbs . That was the first I’d heard of a 404 or 505 . Ever since then I’d wanted one , and when CZ had it in the 550 African I seriously considered ordering but never went thru with it . Fast forward 10-15 years and my gunsmith buddy wants one . So I found him one that someone bought but never fired and we got it at a substantial savings . I load for him for it and his 416 Rigby ! It was a lot cheaper messing with one when I didn’t have to purchase anything lols !

I watched this yesterday, very interesting. Mark and Sam do choose some really different rabbit holes to dive down. Did he have the rifle rebarrelled with a 5 thou wider barrel to accommodate the AMAX as he seemed to be saying the 505 Gibbs was 5 thou smaller than the .50 BMG?

In the video Mark mentions how some cartridges get banned there for reaching a certain power level.
So they like to push the envelope of cartridges that one wouldn't ordinarily consider a long range cartridge.
Heck, they plink at ranges most think is long range in Britain!
