Garage Conversion Deer Larder - Part 1

Another step in the right direction today

I really like the finish on polished concrete and after a bit of internet research, this sealant from Premier paints seems to fit the bill.

First coat applied and now the nervous wait to see if it does dry to a clear finish!

Absolutely outstanding help and advice from David Stretton at Donnington Deer Management.
I initially had thought that I fancied a box rail with fancy ball bearing hooks but David kept me right and suggested that since I will mostly be using the rail for Roe deer that tubular stainless steel and hooks would suit my needs and be much more cost effective. With a massive bit of luck, it so happened David was able to get a 6 metre length of bar brought up to Fife in an arctic that was heading my way anyway.

David made me some sockets for attaching a smaller section of bar and I got some of his rail hooks.

Really looking forward to getting some use out of the snare bar for skinning. I tend to skin my deer by hanging them from the front legs so the snare bar should work really well.

Plumbing works and electrics should be next up with the stud walls and wet wall cladding due to start soon too.

The beginning of what hopefully turns out to be a very productive one!
Stud walls started and washing up sink assembled to check on dimensions and final positioning.
Electrician and plumber due tomorrow to get the first fixings agreed ahead of the wall and ceiling cladding.

Is there a fat and fur collector installed? Its Shaping up very nicely. Beware though I have found out after getting the fridges and winches sorted out, deer are giving the fridge a wide berth. The forester appears delighted.

Hi - sorry, only just found this and thinking along @.25-06 lines, I think you need a trap/ridding point in your drainage arrangements as fur, congealed blood and stray tissue do tend to clog up even the best drains in my experience. Loving the project 👍

Another step forward with the pipe work in place for the hand wash sink, hose and main sink. Both sinks are going to have hot water courtesy of a 15 litre Ariston water heater.
Old electrics due to be stripped out tomorrow and first fix in which will allow for the wall cladding to begin.

Probably the biggest step forward in terms of progress this week.
Led strip lights and electrical sockets fitted.
Ceiling and wall panels installed.
I’ll put a list together once everything is done with what I’ve used and where I sourced it.
Next week should see the small partition wall, hanging rails and the plumbing be completed and then I’ll be pretty much ready to put it to use.

Landig door won’t fully open but it is more than enough for getting deer in and out of the chiller.

Looking sharp, would fridge rotate 90 degrees to allow door to open?
Yes it could but there’s a method to the madness.

I’ve still got to put in a cutting table and potentially another fridge which is just a bit too wide to get in if I rotate them to open out lengthways.

All that said though we might end up rotating it around.

Hose tap and handwashing basin in larder and skinning area.

IMG_7824.webp

Hot water heater and sink fitted in butchery/ cutting area.

Next up, PVC trim for covering lower brick work, hanging rails and sliding door.

Might even manage to run out of excuses for not going stalking by the weekend!

Another step towards completion, long hanging rail still needs some support and adjustment but is going to work very well for my needs. Don’t panic the hanging supports will be straightened and neatened up.
IMG_7845.webp
Sink is now secured to the wall and the hot water heater is working a treat.
IMG_7848.webp
The electric hoist has been fitted in above and will make skinning even easier.
IMG_7847.webp
Photo is deceiving but the hanging rail in the prep area is plenty high enough above head height.
IMG_7844.webp
Opted for a pvc facing to cover the brick work and make cleaning easier. It should do everything I need it to.

IMG_7849.webp
Next up, additional support and securing of long hanging rail, both stainless steel rails need sanded and polished up, sliding entrance door to be installed and that will be about it bar blue roll dispenser and maybe some stainless shelves.
