Schmidt and bender 8x56 lens cover

Can anyone offer advice please? I have a Schmidt 8x56 and want to fit a lens cover on the eye piece end. The focusing ring has a rubber ring that sits slightly proud. See picture. Has anyone found a way of getting the main brands (Vortex, Butler creek) of lens cap to fit snuggly without snagging on the rubber ring ?

I use a March flip cap on the ocular on a Schmidt Polar T96. Not sure if the rubber bit is similar. I can take a picture later or measure it but I am always surprised that more people do not use March flip ups on their scopes. Firstly they are cheap but importantly they are really easy and quiet to use and seriously robust and well made. They are like a much much better version of the old Butler Creeks. Over the years I got tired of crappy Vortex flips ups and Tenabrex which are noisy and move about. I always like the Butler Creek option but they are just crap from a longevity point of view. Years ago I bought a March scope which came with their own flip ups made in the Deon factory where the scopes are built. It was immediately apparent that the Japanese had overengineers a simply piece of plastic which was lightweight but robust and simple. It was importantly also low profile and not bulky in any way.

March have schematics on their websites of various scopes they offer, so you can find out what the outer dimensions are of certain ocular and objective housings and match up the flip ups that suit those scopes. You just then need to cross reference those dimensions to your own scopes to see if they are a close enough fit. On the T96 for example, the wide angle eyebox flip up fits perfectly on the ocular knurled knob to the point where you can actually rotate it to adjust the ocular focus if you want but it never comes lose. It also provides a little extra shading to sun flare if you are using the scope with the sun shining brightly behind you. For the objective, the March 56mm flip up is marginally too large but a wrap of masking tape followed by a wrap of insulation tape provides the perfect snug fit with no damage to the scope finish.

I tried Vortex Defenders and another brand the name of which escapes me, none were very good in my opinion. In the end I bought a neoprene scope cover from Big Ears fitted a cable tie in the middle and haven’t looked back.

This helpful - so you fit the cover onto the knurled knob not the actual scope body ? Or is it on the body with the focusing knob sitting proud ?

Keith, thanks - so does the cover fit on the scope just behind the rubber focusing ring ? You squeezed it over ?
I made sure that the focus ring was adjusted to my eye and then slipped the cover over in that position. It's an easy way of telling if the focus ring has moved too as your lens cover position will be out. Of course, you can make a small + or _ adjustment without the flip up cap getting in the way.

I forgot to take a pic. It is on the knurled ring and does not touch the actual scope body (from memory)

Will dig it out later if I remember to check

Like you I have a few s&b scopes. One with bulter, 2 with vortex. Neither allow easy focusing of the eyebox ring. I think tennarblex do one to attach behind the ring that allows for adjustment- but I couldn’t work out from their website which adaptor works.

The Tennabrex aren’t great they tend to spin quite easily. If you have an issue with the rubber on vortex defender covers not touching the main body of the scope either a few wraps of electrical tape to build it up or a zip tie to cinch the rubber down. Belt and braces is both.

Yes I was the same with the tennarblex and they are expensive and difficult to get

Ok thanks will try that later

The Vortex Defenders were the best of what I had, but the required nipping up with a cable tie for a snug fit.

Honestly, I wouldn’t bother with cap / covers. The neoprene covers from Big Ears held on with a cable tie in the middle has been a revelation. I’d never go back to cap / covers.
