Certificate Renewal

I had no faith in my GP's ability to fill out the form correctly or in time, so went with shootcert who were actually less than half the price my GP asked too. He was quite stroppy about it 😂. Sussex also don't accept paper applications/renewal either, and took 25 weeks to issue.

As I see it, there are several 'controls' built into the Licencing process.
1. Review of medical history: Your right, this does not guarantee the future. But it will highlight some people who's history means they are not suitable, or further information is required to help the FLO decide.
2. Flag on medical records: This is intended to help identify problems that may arise during the life of the certicate. Not perfect, because some people rarely see their GP.
3. References: This can be a very effective control if applied properly.
My referees are close acquaintances, is see them most days.
I have given my referees, and indeed other close family, my blessing to contact the police if they saw a change in behaviour that made them feel concerned. I put it to them, that if it was a real melt down (tiggered by some future unforeseeable event) then they'd actually be doing me a great favour.

2. I can see some use for, 1, is of dubious value, you can't exactly put value on some random GP opinion of 50 odd years ago, good or bad, 3 is a total waste of time, who on earth would use bad references?

?
Thanks for the link.
Take a look at the top of page 2.
If you filled that in and sign off, you gave consent for the police to have access to your medical records.
Per my post #17, I stated the access consent element as you say, but there is nowhere where I confirm that any such medical conditions are not listed on my medical report - the point being that I do not get to see my medical report so how could I confirm they are not present?

That is not the case in Scotland, or at least in Ayrshire.

My GP provided the medical report directly to Police Scotland and I did not receive a copy.

There is no opportunity in the process for me to validate the contents of the report.

This is how it should be for England and Wales also in my opinion. However just ask the GP for a copy after all you are the one paying.

Respectfully I must challenge you on this. I know at least two people who have submitted hard copy renewals to Surrey & Sussex without any issues. That said if you have evidence that paper applications are being refused, please send it to your favoured shooting organisation so they can raise the issue with the force.

The BMA has made GPs opinion perfectly clear so why not use an organisation such as shootcert that sticks to the point rather than all this can't do, won't do nonsense from your very well numerated local surgery?

As an example of waiting time. My Cambs FAC/SG certificate expired end of February 2024. My renewal application was entered in December 2023.
I have since had an 8 week extension followed by a 6 month extension. This expired end of September 2024. No more extensions are given thus my firearms are in storage at a monthly cost.
I wrote to the Crime Commissioner who acknowledged the issues of short staffing and new home office guidance and that they were currently investing in new staff to clear the backlog.
I wrote to my MP who was very good and got onto the licensing department straightaway. I then received and email from firearms licensing informing me that the licence is approved and will be posted very soon. Over a week and a half later it hasn't arrived but I am thankful they have at least made contact with an update.
I live in hope.

If you are a BASC member, get hold of Ben Cotterell (Firearms Officer, Eastern region). He should have the right contacts to confirm whether your certs have actually been printed and posted.
