Lead update.

Will have to see if I can find it but not that long ago there was an announcement that the Aussies have stopped their proposed ban on use of lead - there must be some science behind that decision so surely it can be applied just as much here as it can there? @Conor O'Gorman - is BASC aware of this & if so what are they doing about it? (Yes I’m a paid up BASC member & happy to provide details by PM as I’d like you to represent my interests in this respect please.)

I’m thinking not so mental as it could be. Useful derogation for small calibres and target shooting. Everything else will go on as normal a few high pheasant shoots knackered but those who can afford that can afford bismuth?!
And anyone that does practical shotgun, having to change from lead to bismuth/steel will triple the price of a practice session in which is quite easy to get through 150 cartridges

Reading into it a bit further, if this goes ahead, lead shotgun cartridges would basically be banned in any cirumstance unless you are an Olympic athlete of which they think there are ~50 of in the UK

This includes game, clay shooting, target shooting, etc.

No degroation for black powder that I can see? No degroation for clay shooting unless you are already an Olympic athlete? @Smellydog stock up on your shot of choice.

And where will these Olympic athletes train? why would a ground bother to facilitate them? Then the reason lead clay cartridges are “cheap” is due to the massive volume they are manufactured in, so the price would likely significantly increase. Plus if lead is harmful in the environment then it is harmful regardless of quantity.
Then how do the next generation of potential Olympic athletes train?

HSE suggest that is 1,250,000 lead cartridges a year, well a single manufacturers can be making millions every month.

Ban lead shot for all or for none.

They don’t care about the cost to the individual, if you want to shoot you have to pay simple as that.

Gun shops are closing around the country, the industry is already struggling due to Covid, BREXIT and wars this will only increase the demise of shooting.

e.g

It is with great sadness and reluctance that we have to announce Artemis Outdoors UK has decided to close its doors for the final time.

The past few years have brought many changes to the trade with Brexit, Covid, a number of company takeovers and the terrible shooting in Plymouth all bringing their unique challenges to our industry.

As a result, we have taken the difficult decision to wind down our business and during the coming days each of our suppliers will announce which distributor they will be working with in the future.

12 gauge clay steel loads almost the same price as lead (plastic wad). Game as loads about £40 -£70 a thousand more then lead I’m told the bio wad increases prices. Bismuth about 5 times the price.
In my view this is not the end of the shooting world. Others may have different opinions.

The cheapest fibre wad with a half decent load I'm seeing in there is £520 per 1000 which is over double but not quite triple what we are paying per 1000 equivalent lead cartridges
Clay loads are cheaper. Fibre wads cannot be used with steel. Cheapest £270 per thousand. If I were you I’d be more worried about ricochet with steel in practical shotgun than prices of ammunition.

Eco Wads then, we can't shoot plastic wad on our land. Looks like the cheapest on the 2nd link is £452 per 1000 which isn't as bad as £520, but still a hefty increase. I've never tried shooting steel cartridges at practical to know to be honest but I guess yes it makes sense that shooting steel at steel plates at close ranges might not be pleasant

I’m sure BASC will continue to fight our corner and oppose the impending ban 😂

Don't be silly they initiated it 🤬
And I for one will never forgive them for going down this path, can’t see them now turning back & fighting the proposals.
It was probably a well intentioned thought from a singular person which got pushed through & nobody had the time or gonads to say ‘hang on a sec, can we just think about this for a sccond’
