Replacement tyres

I know this has been discussed many times but I have a simple question: is there a better, cheaper alternative to BFG KO2 tyres for a Hilux? I'm looking for something mud and snow rated, doesn't affect fuel consumption too much and not too noisy.

Check out Cooper STT PRO or ST MAXX tyres.
I've had both, with ST MAXX on again. 225/75/16 on a 2.5 Hilux, still getting 31mpg average.

Best for winter: Yokohama Geolandar AT G015

Alternatively and a bit rougher: General Grabber AT

Both carry the 3PMSF symbol. And both are significantly better in winter than the BFG, which hardens after 2 years to a degree that makes it a slick in ice, sleet and snow.

Much though I love the Geolandar AT GO15, I'd not really want to get into serious mud with them (I do regularly have them in wet, greasy parks). Worth a look at Yokohama's more off-road oriented X-AT ?

Does the X-AT have a 3PMSF rating?
I‘m not familiar with the legal situation in the UK and wether you guys really need it during the winter months.

Been running these for the last 12 months, find them good all round. Won't ever be not going back to BFG's had them for years but last set where sh*te.

I would agree with that. I have the Geolandar's and brilliant tyres they are off road but they are not a proper soupy mud tyre. In very wet deep mud, I would not use those. They are fairly good in the snow though. What they excel at is being good at most things without being bad at most things while being brilliant at nothing. The compromises are you cannot go through tarmac corners at speed as the tyre walls are a touch soft and you cannot go proper mud plugging.

No, the X-AT doesn't have the severe snow service accreditation. Do we really need it, guess it depends where you live, but for most I'd think not.

Another vote for GG AT3’s put them on my Disco 4 great off road and low noise on motorway

The toyo open country mud terrains have been really good I've found. I have them in 33x12.50 on my truck and do alot of miles on the motorway

Just a brief observation of BFG KO2 A/T vs General Grabber AT3.

Out on Saturday morning & I shot a fallow doe but didn’t have my carrier so mate came to collect in his truck. He has AT3 tyres all round & I have KO2 all around.

Deer collected & we set off back to the chiller with him in front. As we get a bit of a muddy patch at the junction of two tracks I can see him loosing momentum & eventually he’s sat there with all 4 wheels turning, rocking his steering side to side but going nowhere. After several attempts of backing up & getting a run he eventually gets himself going again.

With his truck out of the way I simply drive straight through the clag he’d got stuck in & out the other side, no dramas!

Can’t really have a much more real world comparison of the two tyres than that - although it could just be that one of us is better at driving off road than the other 😉

Better tyre, only one, Good Year Wrangler Duratrac, not sure you’ll find it cheaper! KO2s take some beating tbh!

Cheaper tyre, I had great success with Insa Turbo Ranger All Terrain!

I had KO2s on one car and Insa on the other much cheaper car, never stuck, never blown out, wore well! Worth a punt tbh

Been running Toyo Open Country A/T III on my Izuzu , had them in some silly places foxing and to be fair they've been grand.

Up and down to Scotland and the road noise isn't noticeable and not much differenceto MPG. Plenty good in the snow we had last month too.

Will definitely have them next go round
