The point would be, that the SNP would have their illiterate and ignorant voters believe they were ridding Scotland of foreign (read English) land owners. All they've done is get rid of the perceived hallmarks of such ownership, the sporting aspects, which will equally appeal to their supporters, bearing in mind the predominance of left wing (ignorant bigot) thinking.
Agreed. It would be a bit like running up to your enemy and blowing your brains all over his trousers having yelled "Take this Ye Sassenach *****!" before pulling the trigger.
I wouldn't bother reading the rest of this, your time would be far better spent behind your rifle.
One of my friends is a Scottish farmer running an owned 550 acre farm in Ayrshire. He had the opportunity to buy another 700 acres adjoining his farm in Ayrshire, or another 500 acres South of the border. He took the 500 South of the border as he felt that anyone with more than 1000acres in Scotland was going to be in the cross-hairs as a filthy capitalist landowner. That was just before Covid.
Now the SNP is in the dustbin and the Marxists in Westminster have effectively pre-ordained the expropriation of his land and assets upon his death. I wonder what he is thinking now?
I would imagine you could have heard a pin drop in the UK HQs of the big Ag Machinery manufacturers on Oct 31.
But Hey! Let's not fret. The countryside will be taken over by big companies looking for carbon off-set. They know everything there is to know about sympathetic land management. They have every intention of looking after impoverished tenants in leaky cottages with Ag ties. They are really good at holding rural communities together and helping Old George's widow when she can't manage the rent. We have nothing to fear...Mrs Reeves says so.
The really funny bit is that the farmers and landowners will have to sell the land -no point selling a part as the remaining chunk is even less viable than it was before the sale- to pay the 20% IHT. Don't forget the Capital Gains Tax. This would leave them with about 42p in the pound after conveyancing fees +VAT and all the other lovely stuff nobody thinks about. The companies that buy the land will probably be paying tax in Switzerland!
Why are the small businesses and FSB/CBI not screaming blue murder? If you are a brickie/sparky/plumber/scaffolder/tyre shop owner/engineer etc., and own your own buildings, yards and a few vehicles, you are in the same spot as the farmers. I don't think they have worked it out. I think the trade associations are asleep. I expect that they and their membership do not see IHT as a small businessman's problem. After all, IHT was always a disease of the rich until Oct 31.
The real point to my maniacal, foam-flecked, right-wing rant (and for which I apologise in advance) is that this is going to change the countryside for ever. It will happen inside a single generation.
Can you imagine ringing the offices of any of the charming, noble-hearted land agency firms, after the sale of the land, to ask if the publicly quoted chemical / cosmetic / energy companies, banks or supermarkets that bought it (take your pick of any of those sorts of companies, they are all as nice as each other) wouldn't mind allowing you to continue controlling deer on their land? "Would you mind me beating out the corner of your wood for the farm shoot? It's only once a month in the Winter".
The Countryside Alliance, BASC, BDS, GCWT ought to be bellowing about this. They should be teaming up with the farmers, CBI and FSB and dragging the Government to the table.
I think they're all a tad busy trying to work out how to convince us they have done a good job on lead shot and that it was not a sell-out after all.
We are about to experience the rare privilege of watching all of our worst fears being realised and our warning calls proven correct. We, like Cassandra before us, are cursed by Apollo. We can read the future, but no-one wants to listen. Labour will tell everyone that they have improved things. They, like the SNP, have smashed the fiendish Upper Classes and chased them off the land for the benefit of "THE PEOPLE"! "What wicked devils they were". "They kept slaves too, you know".
It is a shame "THE PEOPLE" cannot tell their Arris from their humero-ulnar joint on such topics. They wouldn't care if they could. They're all happily watching Dancing on Ice.
The terrifying thing is that I still, even now, hear these sweet, kindly people saying "They clearly don't understand what they are doing". Really? So you don't believe that this is a carefully thought out land grab? You think someone in Whitehall has made an error of judgement?
Depressing stuff. We'd all be better off in Russia.
