Boots is there such a thing as softer/more flexible?

If you've got weak ankles and feet then a stiff supportive boot is necessary, prime example is fell runners. Much harder terrain than the average stalker and much faster and liable for a slip or trip and yet they run in lightweight trainers because they train appropriately.

If you have decent strength and balance then maybe look at Vivi Barefoot Forrester boots which are waterproof or one of the many competing brands that are now emerging.

If it's dry and warm I will stalk in a pair of Skinners Socks as nothing comes close to being as quiet or supple when walking outdoors.

I’ve had various pairs of Altbergs over the past 15 years or so and the quality has been steadily declining as they seem to be fulfilling more and more police/military contracts.

I’ve had the Warrior Aquas, Norways and Field and Fells. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone these days unless they were getting them for free/issued.

Meindl boots are my go to, I’ve recently replaced a pair of Bhutans with a pair of the Dovre Extremes. The Bhutans lasted me 8ish years of near daily wear before they started to leak in a bit. If you don’t need higher leg boots I’d have a look at the Bhutans.

Edit:

If you want something really lightweight, Jim Green boots are brilliant. Used across Southern Africa by game guides, rangers, farmers and hunters.

Well…the northern Irish eBay bargain iturris have turned up!

First impressions is they are in good condition so 35 quid is a bit of a steal.

Immediately they feel a better quality boot than the altbergs…the padding feels more luxurious and the leather seems more supple and better quality.

Admittedly it’s difficult to directly compare as these boots might be very well broken in vs mine.

I also feel walking around the kitchen that immediately they are less clumpy and more flexible, I suppose this is down to the soles being not as stiff.

Anyway I’ll have to wear them out and about a bit and only time will tell.

I think though they do feel higher quality than the altbergs and that confirms to a certain extent what’s been said above…

Hi all,

I’ve currently got a pair of Altberg defenders bought new for 75£ they are the official issue ones.

Tbh I’m really not getting along with them, I’ve replaced the insole with a sorborthane posh one and still no good, sore feet after a stalk/day in them.

They just feel extremely stiff and clompy almost.

I’ve read as many thread on here as possible and have had a good look at all the options, crispi, Hanwag, Meindl, zamberlan etc etc.

These all seem like quite stiff mountaineering style boots which I can understand would work in the highlands but seem a bit much for lowland stalking in the South east?

I was wondering is there a style of boot which is a bit softer/more flexible at all?

Any recommendations or what should I do instead of the Altbergs?

Cheers!
I’ve get a pair of lowa’s sat in the shed for the same reason, sole is far too stiff.

Best I’ve had were diotto auchleeks which, once work in, we’re like slippers!

Yes, I can completely understand. Granted for actual mountain hunting that kind of support is very important but for general mooching about the countryside I think it’s a bit much. Some people seem to swear by them though…

They are a great boot hope you like them in the end!

I've got a pair of Lowa Z-11S GTX and I find them very lightweight, soft and comfortable for a tall boot. They're made of a suede leather and fabric, but still clean up pretty easily. When I ordered them I was expecting to be wearing around the house for a week to break them in, but first time i tried them on, they were so comfortable I took them off after 5 minutes and left them till my first outing in them, and had no issues

Yeah, one of my shooting buddies swears by them - hence my purchase.

I really should sell them and stick the money into another pair of diottos, but I wear these for work and now wear for 90% of my shooting!

Buckbootz BBZ6000 Safety Neoprene Wellington Boots nice and warm in cold weather!!

They look a bit of a poor fit around the ankle in your first pic 🤔

Yes potentially true, they are a size up from what I’d usually buy as I thought a bit more space might be good. Unfortunately my left foot is smaller than my right and wearing them around this afternoon the right feel great but the left feels a bit big. Think I need to add a very thin insole under my sorbothane insoles. Also I’d literally just taken them out of the package in the picture and not laces them up very well to be fair….

Try some orthotic insoles 👍

Just got lucky mate, put what @Essexsussex said into eBay and you’ll see them. Mine were off a private seller at 45 but it now and I offered 25 and then we met in middle at 35. Can’t go wrong at that price I don’t think. Also tbh having handled them they appear to me to be worth the 120 ish quid they go for new vs what else is on the market…
