Muntjac feed

We’ve recently had sightings of muntjac in our woods, what do people suggest is a good feed for them so I can set up a trail cam to gauge potential numbers. We have the usually corn in blue barrels for the pheasants on the shoot, would something like a split maize be more attractive for them?

If you are feeding pheasants the Muntjac will soon switch on to whatever you are feeding them. If I’m trying specifically for them I use split maize but that’s mainly because I’m in an area that grows a lot of maize and there aren’t any pheasant shoots in most of my woods. 👍

Cheers for the quick replies, I understand when you say “see it shoot it”, but the odd one has been seen maybe 3-4 times in the passed couple of years , and only ever in the wood. I’d like to gauge a number so we can figure if it’s worth taking a few out in time.

I had similar maybe 10 years ago, on a farm I shoot on very regularly. They started to be spotted maybe once every 18 months, then it got to being spotted a couple of times a year, then the next year I shot 10 and they just keep coming.

The last one I saw was fed a 150gr Interlock, which it must have liked, as it went down well.

Shoot on sight, as before long you will have lots of them.
Take a read of some of @Tim.243's posts about the numbers he is continually taking off small areas of land.

I should have put the first time-the feeders I use are solely for shooting them on. Don’t worry about letting them get established, they will do that regardless.

Place trail cameras up around hedgerow / woodland openings and obvious trail paths to catch them.
A shoot I’ve been on had established feeders and the roe and muntjac seemed to know where to go and sneak in and out of the wood to get it. However in my experience I’ve tried, apples, grain, corn, bread, salt licks and molasses. You’ll get every other species but the muntjac normally just keep walking.

Pheasant feed areas are a magnet for Muntjac. If you are seeing a few each month, you have a lot. They are good at hiding away in dense cover. Keep shooting them, you will be surprised how many are really in the area.

Just shoot them, as like iceberg's most of it is hidden

I hear what people are saying but I would love to see even one where I live, edge of the peak district, there have allegedly been sightings a few miles away ( South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire) but nothing here, if you lot with tons of em were to accidentally " lose" a few up here it would be greatly appreciated 🤫
