Sauer 505 user experiences ?

It’s been nearly twelve months since the release of the 505

Has anyone bought one - used one for long term

Interested in views / opinion / experiences from end users

Had a shock report from a friend they were buying an R8 which had stirred me along thinking if I were to purchase a factory rifle what would it be (aside from a ubiquitous T3)

I’ve arranged some counselling for the person concerned by the way

You could have a look at the Strasser RS700. Rem 700 footprint. Lothar Walther barrels as far as I know.

I too have looked at the 505. The accuracy looks excellent in the tests, I have to say I have been sorely tempted!!

Oh it's accurate

Tried it in a few different calibres. Using factory ammo straight from the store.
Absolutely no complaints from me.

I do like a well made precise bit of kit (I'm a precision engineer).

I have one in .243 since last August.
I like it a lot but can't make it group with any non lead ammo, is currently back at the importer for testing, waiting to see what have they got to say...

Are all Strassers straight pull?

I have a old Sauer 202 and my friend has a R8 where his wins is the fact the barrel and scope mount together and this makes the interchangeable barrel system work as so long has you can afford it every barrel/calibre has a scope attached and is immediately zeroed ready to shoot. The Sauer system requires re zero every barrel/calibre change…. Anyway I’ve only got one barrel for it but at least theoretically blaser is a better system. My friend has three or four barrels and scopes and enjoys the switching. Mind you the price of barrels he could have 3 or four rifles for only a bit more. But if moneys no object??

That must be frustrating to say the least. I wonder why they have gone for a 1:10 twist with the .243 rather than a 1:8 with the other 6mm the 6XC.
Perhaps it’s a manufacturing thing? I wonder if the chambers are hammer forged along with the rifle or if the blanks are made and then the chamber cut separately. If it’s the first then making a new mandrel is a big deal.

Yes, 1:10 , they don’t do a 1:8 in .243
I tried every copper ammo under the sun but no joy. Two different high end scopes as well, mod on and off and so on…

Have you tried 80 grain bullets and given the rifle a good clean beforehand. Many of the European barrels are built to metric standards. Certainly my Heym SR20 in 243, whilst nominally 1 in 10” is actually a bit slower as its a metric rounded to nearest 5cm measurement.

Mine shoots very well with 80gn Fox ammunition.

With 100gn lead in shot well with RWS, but wouldn’t shoot Norma or Sako 100gn ammo at all.

In places like Germany 243 is not that popular and is very viewed as a Roe / Fox cartridge. Min calibre for bigger game animals is 6.5mm.

I have a 404 which is my stalking rifle and can't fault it.
Very tempted with a 505 for dedicated foxing rifle. Had a quick look at then at the shooting show. Only thing I seemed to notice was it did seem to be heavier to me

Actually the 80gn Fox worked quite well , but are extremely tight in the chamber, so i can't use them.

Just you wait, once I have a Blaser I will invariably be invited to join the glitterati with my new “thinking man’s rifle”🤣
