What's this, don't think it's TB....

Great thread from the OP & excellent contributions along the way too - it's exactly this sort of thread which really makes regular vists to the SD site worthwhile, every day is a school day and all that
Thanks especially to @Antonyweeks for kicking it off and the very informative follow up
Thanks to the rest of you for the very useful input along the way too 👍

Strange when I worked in pathology we used Virkon in our discard jars in the Class one cabinets which were used for all high risk work including Tb. Mind you I retied 4 years ago.
Virkon is v good but doesn't like high contamination loads.

As a sort of post script - had the results back this morning by email and it was bTB. Tested positive in the lab......
Then had a call from what was named "Public Health England" but is now something else with a random name. In fact nearly put the phone down as I thought it might be a nuisance call. It was only when I very grumpily said "What's this about then?" and the lady replied "You recently submitted information on a deer with possible bTB" that I realised it wasn't a company trying to offer me grants and I was much more polite! She was checking to make sure I wasn't in an 'at risk' category: HIV positive, recently had surgery, under the age of 16 etc etc). Also wanted to know if anyone else in those categories might have had contact....
Anyway, episode closed. Thanks to everyone for all the helpful and positive comments, much appreciated. :)

Many thanks for providing the update, and interesting to hear about the follow-up call.

Good thread and useful, especially as we are awaiting the results on a fallow deer.
Can I add, that when you are contacted by the vet, see if you can get a reference number and also get land owner's CHP number as without them, calling in for the results become difficult to obtain.
Out of interest, i may have missed it but was the beast on its own away from the herd?

Yes. The lady that owns the woodland where I stalk called me to explain there was a solitary hind on its own tucked up next to a footpath. So it wasn't with anything when I found it.

Wow, you got exceptionally lucky! I've shot several deer with suspected and confirmed TB and APHA were no where near so helpful. Generally they have wanted us to take samples, chill them and deliver them to a meeting place convenient for them (although I simply insist they come to me)

One instance they took 5days to get back to me in which time I'd destroyed the samples and gone abroad.

They also don't get back in touch with culture results and take some chasing to get the results.
