Taff part 2

Taff the labrador pup I bought from Andy at Grugair kennels is 10 months old now.
What a cracking dog he's turning out to be.
The basic training was a doddle and as for retrieving he is a retrieving machine. Started water training with no problem. That's been put on hold for a few weeks because of ice on the water again. Another week and we should be ice free.
Tracking training has been going well, put on hold till the spring weather and longer days kick in. I have hit upon a problem though. The problem is not the dog but my 76 year old legs. I can't traverse the rough, rock, brash strewn ground like I used too. So whilst I'll continue with the tracking training I won't be doing the tests. He should be handy for the odd roe, fallow or boar runner we may get in the hunting team.

It seems your chosen mate Taff is fulfilling all your needs/dreams, when you
realise that they are more intelligent than we are at their job it’s sometimes difficult to keep up with them in more ways than one.
As l was told “watch your dog and learn from them” I’ve been trained by many a good dog.

Sorry about your legs remember Taff’s got four let him do the work.
He a grand looking lad.

No doubt about it he's a smart lad and has a terrific nose. In the main my old legs work OK. If I'm out training , picking up or just walking the dogs I just use one of those hiking staves. Tracking training I can keep making him sit when negotiating a bit of rough ground. But doing the test, making the dog keep sitting and using the stav while watching where I'm putting my feet is not going to work.
I'm expecting to keep mobile for many more years yet. It's just accepting and adapting to advancing old age.
We're putting out 900 ducks this year. 600 on the wet land and 300 on another lake we have acquired. So there is going to be plenty of picking up for him and me this coming season plus there could be a couple of other estates to pick up on.

Hej Jagare.
I must admit I’ve not trained a dog specifically for tracking. It sounds to me that you know exactly what you are doing but slightly hampered by your lack of speed, with a little thought you will undoubtedly conquer what you see as a an obstacle, maybe try two Nordic poles, Taff will work it out what you need from him whilst you get on with navigating your ground.

Hej, Andy , I'm keeping very well and it's nice now spring is round the corner. I was up the wetlands today giving Taff a few water retrieves. He's a natural of course 🙂. Hidden dummies no problem and he ranges really well. We have a lot of stone walls and he goes over those no problem. Like petter I'm more than pleased with his progress so far.
