7prc/300prc very similar

Choose a bullet weight and decide how fast you want to run it and then get a 300 Norma Mag…

I would look at the 7x64, or its rimmed sister in 7x65r if you fancy a break action rifle. Both have always had a fast twist 1 in 8”ish and a long throat so it can long heavy calibre bullets. This means it shoots most non toxic bullets well. With a long sleek 140 to 150gn monolithic bullet it will do just about anything you want. 7x57 or 30-06 would be my other choice.

However the easy choice is a 308. It’s been described as the labrador of cartridges. But I just think that the 308 is just short and fat in shape, appearance and feel and you don’t get that sense of excitement as you do when you load up a long sleek cartridge into the magazine.

Hmm I agree that larger is relative but LARGE is large. Personally medium bore ends at .375 and large bore is upwards from there for international use but in the UK anything from 7mm upwards is probably in the large category. Lots of good ideas here and honestly you wont go wrong. Just bear in mind once you have got used to your large calibre you will then want larger!!

Afternoon guys,

What’s everyone’s choice of larger Cal’s? Got my renewal in and looking to go for larger than the 243 for red/ sika fallow and bore!

270?
308?
7mm
338 lapua mag😂
With Boar from what I have seen most are shot in the dark so that will mean a scope capable of that, so 2 scopes (if you want to use glass) then a glass scope or digital scope with IR or both!
I would say you will shoot more deer than boar as your list has 3 deer species

Yes it’s for if I manage to get a trip to Europe for bore which is my intention. But would like to have the calibre to use on all of the large deer.

I have a .243 and a .308 currently and looking to ditch the .243 for a 6.5x55 and add a 7x64.

Really enjoyed the .243 and fine for Roe downwards using homeloaded 80 monolithics - and my experience is it's a good choice too for regular sized lady Fallow, but had some track and trace issues on palminated bucks when using that particular hand load. Barrel doesn't like anything heavier copper wise, so is limiting.

.308 will stay for woodland and probably swap to a shorter barrel version for that specific purpose.

7x64 for bigger stuff (off to the SW in November for Reds) and the occasional trip to the continent.

Chatting to my FEO today about this. Wish me luck!

Then you won't be needing a digital nv scope, and your Boar trips will be far less then a .270 as they are flatter than the loppy .308 lol

ALL!

Jokes aside 30 Caliber is my favorite So far. 308 being very cheap to reload and shoot. My first magnum choice was going to be 300 Win Mag, but i think i will go for .300 PRC.

I would like to have a .338 and maybe a .50 BMG if i can find a place to shoot it!

A lot frankly depends on what type of hunting you are actually going to do. There is very big difference in requirements of rifle, optics and bullet choice from shooting large driven big lowland reds and boar, to shooting long range in the mountains. Pretty much any of the cartridges described can be used for either purchase but choice of rifle set up is far more important.

Magnums / PRC’s are wonderful but come at a premium in terms of ammo cost - indeed anything that’s not 243, 308 or 270 comes at a premium. If you reload it’s not really an issue.
