20 inch vs 24 inch tikka 6.5 creedmoor

Lite bottom metal in CTR stock looks like this. There's no way regular T3 stock takes CTR mag and bottom metal.

Don't have CTR so pic stolen from post #22 at Tikka T3x vs. CTR vs. aftermarket bottom metal / magazines
Interesting, because mine are the same footprint. Even took a CTR bottom metal up to Muir, so he could convert his T-3X to CTR mags. Is a difference maybe between T-3X and T-3 Lite(?). Or maybe a difference in US sold ones?

I'm at work right now, but will try and remember to take pics when I get home this evening.

If you look at the atlasworx bottom metals you can see diagrams with dimensions, ctr type listed as 33mm wide, the t3x LA and SA are listed as 29.4mm wide,

I have a mcmillan a5 in a ctr inlet, I put my long action metal in but left a gap all around like pic above, instead I used the atlasworx ctr to aics dbm (sa) for my 22-250

As a thought - Have a look at the bergara hmr pro, just purchased one. It's fantastic in 6.5 cm. It's one of the american made ones. Can get it in 20 and 24"

No need to swap bottom metals and everything about, it comes with everything you need as standard. Aics mags, triggertech diamond trigger, cerecoted and a fully adjustable stock as standard. It's an upgrade from the earlier models.

I looked at the tilka t3 and they are expensive for what they are now, when i first started they were great. but now a supervarmint and the bergara hmr pro are same price so went for that instead!

You definitely don’t want to be going heavy for sporting use. However, I wouldn’t be going 20” either. Ultimately, it’s all about personal choice.

T
Why?

I shoot a heavy barrelled .280 (26”) 6.5 creedmoor (26”) and a semi heavy barrel on my 25-45 and my .223 AI (23.5”).

The creedmoor has been extensively used for foxing at night and the .280 for a lot of deer work including Scotland, 90% of what I do is on foot as I get bored sat in a seat! I’m not a big bloke but it’s never caused an issue, all my mods are steel ASE Utra end cans too! Never an issue over my lighter rifles such as the sporter barrelled 6.5x55, in reality you’re probably talking less than 1/2 a pound going from a sporter to a heavy barrel.

I’ve just bought one too in 300 PRC, good for the money (mainly based on the stock) but it’s the worst rifle I’ve ever owned in terms of materials, fit and finish and general quality! It is at least accurate but not sure I’d buy another.

The hmr 14 or the hmr 14 pro? Only reason I ask is the pro is built in America and the standard in spain. I can't fault the quality on mine to be honest.

I'm coming off the back of having a sauer 404 so I'm a bit of a quality snob. Certainly not the same but more than good enough for me

The standard HMR to be fair, but I suspect the uplift in cost for the pro version outweighs any improvement in the rifle. The extra £1k+ on the pro puts it into the realm of premium rifles.

The 300 PRC mag housing has so much play in it that the mag rattles, the finish marks really easily, the bolt shroud and mag well metal is very poor.

I’m in a dilemma with the Roughtech Ember SS (6.5CM) only being available in 24”. My dealer suggested looking for an alternative in 20” for “general stalking” - mainly Yorkshire Roe but will be used north of the border and Ireland for larger beasts too. I’m 6’1” and not worried about weight, just the practical aspect over my shoulder with a mod.
Has anyone had a special order built from Tikka? They fit 20” SS fluted barrels on other models so shouldn’t be too much of an ask?

One for @Laurie, perhaps. Would a 20" barrel experience more throat wear than a 24" barrel if both were loaded to achieve the same muzzle velocity? Just a thought!

I doubt you can get anything from Sako that doesn't appear in catalog and have an SKU. Single piece that is, they do make special orders in batches.

It's hard enough to get something that HAS an SKU, but not popular/stock item for given geographic area. Factory representatives quote 12 month lead time, and even then it's not guaranteed they actually put it together.

I’ve the green roughtech in .308 in as 20”. I could of got the same in 6.5cm no problem.

Phone GMK direct they will tell you what stock they have.
Out of interest, are most people measuring with cleaning rod in muzzle up to closed bolt?
that’s how I’d measure the barrel.

Normally yes, as all other things being equal, the 20-inch barrel load would have to be loaded to higher pressures to achieve the same MV. Throat and barrel temperatures are directly related to chamber pressures, and it's heat that kills barrels through throat and leade erosion.

There is no stock of a 20” roughtech ember SS in 6.5cm as it’s not offered as a factory option. Hence my question “would 24” barrel be detrimental?”

On the contrary it would be desirable 6.5 CM has a 24" barrel for a reason I’ve a friend has a 6mm CM that has a 26" barrel no issue carrying or stalking has a moderator fitted also.

This is my dilemma! Ballistically the 24” would be preferable from everything I’ve read and been told- no argument there. When my RFD told me he wouldn’t recommend it due to being too long, I asked why would Tikka put it out then!? I can always add a smaller/lighter mod to help compensate the balance? Possibly a Stalon x108 as opposed to the longer model. I’m a much bigger fella than he is- maybe he’s just pushing his preference a little more than I need him to.
The longer barrel I’m sure would be preferable during my trips to Scotland and Ireland too…
