A couple of very very good shots.

Hunting Sambar deer over hounds is a very old tradition in Victoria.
I was impressed with the Swede`s shooting..no faffing around,rifle up,sight picture,calculate the lead and elevation..bang.....dead.
When you are out in our bush hills you need to use all of your bushcraft...or stay the night in the bush..wink!

That makes my fox drives look pathetic!

What sort of acreage would they be covering? It looks never-ending and extremely difficult.
I know that country pretty well and its normal to have the hounds in 20-30 square kilometre patch, sometimes they go "over the top" into the next system. Those bush tracks are the key to keeping up with them. and the word track means anything from super steep and greasy to fallen trees, snow, slush and all sorts of 4wd breaking climbs or slides out of control.
Drop in with the hounds, find fresh marks and 'cry havoc' a lot of the boys spend the day in the bush following the hounds. Its tough and exciting with big days. Here`s a pin,not far from where the video was made, same sort of country/terrain. I met Old Grandpa "Pop" on the Dray Track 40 plus years ago we talked about dogs n deer, what else. Those blokes in the video are shooting sambar on the same runs that old Pop pioneered a lifetime ago. His hounds were running below and he was interested in my staghound....its a fuggen long way to the bottom btw.
I had a look at a spot I walked in from (red) to where I knocked over a stag (yellow) that system is circa 16 sq k`s and nothing for hounds to lap it a few times on a good one.

Those hounds have a Beagly look about them. That looks like a great hunt. Nothing better than when the hounds kick off.
I was behind Magnus when he shot the Aimpoint shooting simulator at a game fair a few years ago. Big lads and good shots.

Correct, back in the 'old days' most hound packs were comprised of English Foxhounds, some old lines may have had a wee infusion of bloodhound in them also. I hunted over the Pom Dogs, they were big and rangey with voices like lions...then the anti green ****s started their **** and the big dogs were accused of pulling deer down. The hunting was banned momentarily until the compromise of using Beagles and Harriers was reached. I shot a few Sambar over hounds too and being in there with them is a treat.

Amazing film!. Just out of interest, do you have to hang the meat for longer if the Sambar are driven and full of adrenaline? Great to see whole families involved. I hope the digs got treats - liver/ heart etc.?

Hanging depends on the need for it whether immediate or for later. I have had plenty of venison from hound hunting and some is better than some that have been shot stalking chewing their cud. Many will say that the meat is ruined by the adrenaline coursing through the system, not particularly so.
Dogs always get a feed of course.
I remember back in `84 or so shooting a big stag high on Mt Thorn, several K`s off the river and so ****ing high that it was impossible to retrieve except for a leg or two. Only three members of the team made it up there. George the team boss said to "feed all the hounds as much meat as they can carry in their bellies before you head out"
I saw a hound spew it was that full ha ha.
