‘The Firearms Law Handbook’

There’s been a some discussion of the current firearms law & interpretation of it on a few threads recently. Well drafted laws shouldn’t require ‘interpretation’ but it seems that few, if any, escape the need for such guidance & the current firearms act is no exception.

A reminder of the following book may be due; it’s recommended reading or perhaps just to have prominently placed to impress friends or your local FEO when they visit.

‘The Firearms Law Handbook’ by Laura Saunsbury & Nick Doherty.
I think the current edition is the eighth (2019).
ISBN 9780854902736

It’s 291 pages of reading that by its nature is fairly dry but the authors have made it accessible for those of us who haven’t jointed one of the Inns of Court.
It’s well worth buying if only to dip into for the occasional clarification of some point.

Lest anyone think all legal encounters are ‘dry’ the following from F.E. Smith who was the best legal mind of his generation should provide reassurance

Judge Willis: “You are extremely offensive, young man.”
F.E. Smith: “As a matter of fact we both are; but I am trying to be, and you can’t help it.”

Classic line.

Reminds me of the famous Winston Churchill one at a dinner when the hostess rounded on him.

Hostess - ‘Winston - you are drunk’

WSC - ‘And Madam, you are ugly. But in the morning I shall be sober’

Law is often changing- a lot of New laws are coming , talk is again going towards Moderators are being de-classified and they should be IMHO but a Law has yet to hit the books is of no help to anyone and neither can we be sure there wont be a hit someplace else .

Deer: Law and Liabilities 2nd edition Has just appeared on Amazon for under £5 - might be of interest to some. Just ordered it myself

I've read it cover to cover twice. It's an excellent book and answers almost every question that is asked or debated over and over online. I didn't find it a dry read, but I work with statute law every day for work and have many similar legal commentary books for my own professional field, so I'm pretty used to them and actually enjoy them, for my sins.

I wouldn't waste your money with BASC firearms law book, however. It's very poor in comparison, it contains mistakes and a little too much author 'opinion'. I wish I hadn't bought it, although it's not a huge cost.
