Urgent - truck canopy locked out

Hi folks,

Stalking directory hive mind required. Just got away after a 6 hour journey for a few days away. Arrived to find the locking mechanism on the truck canopy has fallen apart (2023 DMax, uncertain of canopy make) meaning the key barrel isn’t connected to the door latch mechanism.
There isn’t enough flex in it to open the tailgate.
Side windows barely open (open obliquely rather than sliding).
Any thoughts?
The hinges have a split pin and it looks as though I might be able to take the hinges apart and then open the top outwards as such to get in. Can anyone foresee a problem with this? Any similar experiences?

Up a mountain side with an opinel and a corkscrew. All tools that might be useful are, of course, locked inside…

the lock barrel is through the glass so if you take the pins out then pull it back it could pop the glass as the barrel is conected to the tailgate with the glass having a hole through it

Hmm I see what you mean, but I think the lock barrel and the mechanism are no longer attached in any way which is why it’s not opening?
The mechanism with the inner handle on it and the disc that connects the two arms has dropped off into the tub (or so it looks)

I dunno if u can search which is the cheaper glass to replace?
Side of rear.
I imagine rear glass will be curved and side glass will be flat.
So possibly any glazer could cut glass to suit the side wibdows easier without buying the proper branded replacement.
U could probably but a sheet of marguard or perspex and do it ur self

I take it no way to force the catch on side window or unscrew the side window hinges or fastening?

Take the pins out and undo the tailgate (lower red one) and see if it will come as one. you will need 2 people

YOU WILL HAVE TO POP THE GAS STRUTS AND THEY ARE STRONG

Tricky when it’s the wife’s company car!

I’m going to try and take the pins out and dismantle the hinges and see if I can make any progress that way.

Or try and lift the window as best as I can and see if I can flex it enough to open the tailgate- although tried that this evening and it felt very likely that the glass will just go pop.

Side window might be an option (smash and go) but I’d really like a non destructive option if possible.

Do you have AA key cover? - if so try giving them a call & say you’re locked out of the tub, think they cover up to £1000 in costs from memory.

Alternatively, if it’s a company car then likely it’s still under warranty so contact the dealer & make it their problem. Or the leasing company & ditto.

I really wouldn’t be playing with anything myself or you’ll likely end up with a bill from the lease company when it goes back if you’ve damaged anything…

£659 for mine in a Hilux. Sorry, that was the canopy window.
I had to pay £895 for my rear canopy glass the 1st time it smashed whilst sitting on my drive and the truck was brand new, Toyota said it wasn't there problem because it was a Truckman top even though it was supplied and fitted by Toyota, It smashed again a few month later and was replaced FOC when I took legal advice and told Toyota it was there issue because it was fitted by them and I paid them for the canopy.

Good luck to the OP getting into the truck and please keep us updated

Was it a dustpan and brush or a fiddle and success

I’m in!

Drilled the lock and then managed to wiggle the plate that’s attached to the rods.

The genuinely very helpful folk at the Isuzu dealership spent 30 mins scratching their heads before suggesting a hammer was the best option.
I asked if I could borrow a drill to which they smiled and said “yes you can, as long as you use it off our premises but let us know if you need any other tools”.

Went round the corner and drilled the lock out. No glass damaged. Should all be fixed with a new lock.

Thanks for all of the input!

Photos including one with the new key…

Good stuff, glad you never took up the advice from @triggertrix as most he posts is rubbish.

A little late to the show on this one, but had the same thing happen to me years ago. Nissan Frontier SCCC with a SnugTop shell. Ended up just unlocking the tailgate and pulling on the lip of the glass enough to allow the tail gate to pop free under the rain guard lip on the glass. From there I just reached in and actuated the drawbars from the inside. Put the tailgate back up, and tied the back window from the inside, down to the outside ball hitch, and drove home. Replaced the lock at a later time.

At the time, the worst case was me slipping a hacksaw blade between the bedrail and shell, and cutting off the pins that held the shell to the bed (I knew I had a couple C clamps behind the back seat to clamp it down for the ride home). Then just lift the entire shell up enough to get the tailgate down.

Lots of ways to skin this cat I suppose.
