7x57 Oberndorf style build

Went out after some goats this arv, got these three. First was offhand at 30m, the other two off a log at 80m. Also shot a roo at 140m. Needless to say the 154gr RN did the job efficiently. Loving the double set triggers

Proper hunting right there - here most sneak about like snipers or tactical Joe’s, I fear for humanity, but seeing your post restores some faith

Thanks mate - nothing tactical here, my work clothes are about as camo as I go… I took a few photos as I went, maybe I should do a hunt write up?

Thread 'Inaugural Hunt with new Mauser'

This is a hunt report of the blooding of the Mauser Type B in 7x57 I’ve been building for the last four years. It’s loaded with 154gr RN to 2550 fps - very low pressure but no point in squeezing fps with iron sights.



So I went down to the river yesterday spraying weeds and seeing as I would be going in to a goaty area decided to grab the Mauser.



Eventually I caught a glimpse of white up a steep gulley off the river. Glassing I could see a good sized mob of goats. The wind said I had to cross the river and climb the hill downstream of them and approach on the contour. River’s down a...

Looks great with the Lyman fitted! I have a 57 also, but I've been in two minds whether or not to fit it to my 1600 Husky. It's a wee mechanical gem

Got to say I agree with the comments on drop I’ve an orginal 8x60 and the drop is hard to get on with takes a bit more work. This is the same for most old gun rifles and shotguns, modern body shapes need higher combs than our fore farthers

yep modern rifle hunters using older designs, like this, will likely need to raise the comb somehow, but probably more because of the added height of a the scope, more than anything else, i'd say.

At least in my case, because when i take of the scopes of my m98 S and L or my Mannlicher Sch Stutzen 7x57 the cheek rest and line of sight down the iron sights are pretty good and they come very nicely to the shoulder

We are taller and heavier built than our fore fathers, with longer necks etc that changes the gun fit We also generally shoot more head up than they did.

Maybe I'm built old school? I find the drop and sight line ergonomics perfect - it's lovely for fast offhand shots or careful longer shots. I wouldn't change a think regarding stock shape. Different story if I wanted to scope it however. There is a part of me that wonders how different a Type B stock would feel from a Type A stock though. Apparently there is one...

Awesome - do it! I love using receiver peep sights. Both the 150m shots I've taken now have resulted in emphatic kills - one a big billy who was taking a nap. I heard the strike but there was no movement what so ever - I thought I'd missed. When I got up to him turns out he'd died so quickly his body never responded... But most of my shots with this are below 100. Have a nice steel 66 on my Marlin 1895 too

Thanks Guys, keen to get cracking again on this now - so many things have been held by a lack of barrel...

Although currently I’m going round in circles trying to decide which action to use. I was planning on using the one I scrubbed and etching “1937“ where the crest was. The paint represents rough size and position (obviously it will end up crisp, central and square). Since dressing it the level of pitting is roughly the same, I may well remove the nazi markings if I go with the crest one. My thinking behind not using the crest one is that I wanted an original civilian looking one not a sporterised looking one and I have no ties to Portugal. but now I’m wavering mainly due to the crest being an original Oberndorf marking.

So, to try and spur me into a decision - could I please get some opinions?!

All else being equal between the two, and merely talking aesthetics, I'd go with The one with the Crest, but it's super subjective, and thus the "right" answers lies with you alone

Hello mate .-) , well it makes sense that a lot depends on our individual builds of course vs the stock fit, and you might well have a good point, that for some parts of the worlds population the build have generally gone towards being bigger and heavier. I do wonder how much that causes the mal-fit which you describe even when using iron sights vs perhaps the change in shooting technique that you also mention.

Now personally i am not a huge guy, nor do i have very long neck, and when i use my older rifles without their scopes, the fit is very good With a scope, a comb raiser is a must however. And apparently it was even back when Hermann Goring was gifting Mauser98s to people:

I'm with you on that, but I laid out my reasons. Looking back on my decision, I definitely don't regret it. That one with the crest is destined for a 404J barrel, or possibly 9.3x62, haven't decided yet. Either way it will display the crest with pride!

Thank you for asking - but yes I have. I had the hard copy actually but my mum took it to a charity shop after I moved out! To be fair I should have told her I wanted it at some point in the 10 years it sat there. Anyway I found that PDF and downloaded it a few months ago. Great book and it was what really laid the foundation for my CRF (and initially HVA 1640) obsession
