Fly rods for spinning?

Has anyone tried to sea fish with a light spinning reel and rubber lure with a fly rod? (got 20+ fly rods. 3 wt to salmon to choose from!)

There are some "flies" that are really miniature spinners. I think that Decathlon sell them? Certainly I had some and they were bought in France. Now I only ever visitid local tackle shops in Paris, Tours and Dinard so the likelihood is Decathlon.

Ideally, you need large rings to let the line slide through, not little guides like on most fly rods. Buy a cheap Shakespeare spinning rod.
Now therein lies the problem.. I am a fully paid up member of both the tackle tart & "buy once cry once" clubs.. A "cheap" rod just won't happen.. God invented titanium guides just for me and Im obviously going to need a full custom job.

Cheers

Thanks for that, I'll get a few and try with a sinking line.
I've added another link to Ali Express. The only PITA is of course after a session you'll need to take your rod and reel in the shower with you to wash all the salt off. Especially the rings and the body and spool of a metal fly reel.

Yes when I was a kid, but it all goes horribly wrong. Action is all wrong for casting and cranking a fix spool is awkward

Watched a guy fly fishing for king fish with a fly rod and sinking sea fly, you need a good man on the boat controls.

Hello, I fitted a butt extension on a fly rod and used for spinning but top and bottom eyes need to be ones that can take nylon line or braid

I’ve tried casting a light mepps from a 3wt. It was dismal. Action was completely wrong.

I think it might have worked if I’d tried it on a heavier rod (7 or even 9wt) and cast it like a fly, rather than trying to cast it as you would from a spin rod.

To be honest, although it's a few years ago, I used to use an old fly rod with a spinning reel for both spinning with small lures and also running worms down small burns with a couple of split shot to allow short casts. Ideally you would have a decent spinning rod, but at a push I can't see a problem with using a fly rod on an occasional basis. Casting with a single handed fly rod and spinning reel isn't the most comfortable, but not impossible. Just make sure you give everything a rinse off in fresh water when you finish. I believe there was a kit you could buy a while ago that used the same rod, but had a fly rod handle and a separate spinning rod handle so you could cover both options.

Looks like you need one of those Orvis rods which you flip the butt section around and it turns into a spinning rod 😅

Can't remember what they were called though!

A spinning rod is designed to cast with the weight mass at the very tip of the line, and a fly rod is quite the opposite, with the line itself as the mass to take the fly/lure to the desired place.
Casting big lures on fly rods for gamefish can be tiring. I've only dabbled with big flies for pike, I soon went back to a lure rod & braid.

I used a Daiwa 10" 7/9 as an all rounder for years. Put the longest fighting butt I could get into it and took a small fixed spool reel for it . Mostly used to lob an unweighted worm upstream if I changed from fly but would cope with the smallest mepps as well. Worked best with a lazy cast and not like trying to cast a spinning rod.
