Now therein lies the problem.. I am a fully paid up member of both the tackle tart & "buy once cry once" clubs.. A "cheap" rod just won't happen.. God invented titanium guides just for me and Im obviously going to need a full custom job.Ideally, you need large rings to let the line slide through, not little guides like on most fly rods. Buy a cheap Shakespeare spinning rod.
Thanks for that, I'll get a few and try with a sinking line.
I've added another link to Ali Express. The only PITA is of course after a session you'll need to take your rod and reel in the shower with you to wash all the salt off. Especially the rings and the body and spool of a metal fly reel. Thanks for that, I'll get a few and try with a sinking line.
Yes when I was a kid, but it all goes horribly wrong. Action is all wrong for casting and cranking a fix spool is awkward
I’ve tried casting a light mepps from a 3wt. It was dismal. Action was completely wrong.Has anyone tried to sea fish with a light spinning reel and rubber lure with a fly rod? (got 20+ fly rods. 3 wt to salmon to choose from!)
To be honest, although it's a few years ago, I used to use an old fly rod with a spinning reel for both spinning with small lures and also running worms down small burns with a couple of split shot to allow short casts. Ideally you would have a decent spinning rod, but at a push I can't see a problem with using a fly rod on an occasional basis. Casting with a single handed fly rod and spinning reel isn't the most comfortable, but not impossible. Just make sure you give everything a rinse off in fresh water when you finish. I believe there was a kit you could buy a while ago that used the same rod, but had a fly rod handle and a separate spinning rod handle so you could cover both options.Has anyone tried to sea fish with a light spinning reel and rubber lure with a fly rod? A spinning rod is designed to cast with the weight mass at the very tip of the line, and a fly rod is quite the opposite, with the line itself as the mass to take the fly/lure to the desired place.I’ve tried casting a light mepps from a 3wt. It was dismal. Action was completely wrong.
I think it might have worked if I’d tried it on a heavier rod (7 or even 9wt) and cast it like a fly, rather than trying to cast it as you would from a spin rod.
Overpriced…Looks like you need one of those Orvis rods which you flip the butt section around and it turns into a spinning rod
Can't remember what they were called though!
