Is the 6.5 PRC taking over!!

Lately the 6.5 prc is getting a lot more attention/hype on forums and YouTube. I wonder is it going to put the 6.5 Creedmoor in to redundancy.

Probably not.

They’re fairly different.

Creedmoor is closer to a .243 while PRC is closer to a .270. They coexisted very happily.

Been looking into both and that’s how I’ve been thinking about it. One is possibly a modern .243 and the other has a bit more oomph. I do wonder if there is much meaningful terminal performance between the two inside 300 yards? Anyone care to share experiences?

I was going to mention that they are different when it comes to ballistics. Just the PRC is seeming to be spoke about more these days

I’d say most deer legal calibres will kill deer well within 300. Just some calibres have a wee bit more horsepower.

I've got a 243 and a 6.5prc. The 243 is my 'go to' general rifle whereas the prc is my let's reach out and touch things or if im targeting bigger deer like reds.
Don't get me wrong, they both do the job but the prc has more authority and gives me the opportunity to take that last one of a group when it inevitably stops and turns some distance away

Its been around for a few years now. Mines got to be a couple of years old now and more and more people seem to be coming away from the usual 308/270/2506 stuff

6.5prc is my go to rifle and I have several different calibres

hardly and recoil
great in the wind
hits hard

143gr eldx 3100fps

That is very much how I use my Creedmoor and PRC.

What is a 6.5 prc :-|
It’s a newish cartridge (2018, I think) based on some kind of .300 magnum necked down (though does not have a belted case).

It gives 2-300fps more speed than a Creedmoor or Swede for the same bullet.

Very good open hill gun - like a .270 with maybe up 10-15% extra energy. Not something I’d want to shoot a muntjac with! It makes a nasty mess of roe deer at short range - I try to keep it to head shots out to 150 or so.

If you have a .270, there’s very little point getting one!

The 6.5CM is a fantastic crossover cartridge for smaller deer and Target shooting. Minimal powder/heat for the achieved performance. Some of our PRS shooters are reloading their CM cases up to 15 times. For hunting of medium or larger deer also at longer ranges with some wind the 6.5PRC seems just perfect especially if one thinks of mono bullets. The cartridge just looks right. I hope to build a 6.5PRC in a T3 with the new medium MDT magazine and bottom metal.
Pic of 147 Hornady Match in the 5 shot MDT med magazine. Hawkins and others are thinking about (or maybe done it) manufacturing Rem type mag systems for long action M5 footprint with med magazines. The medium sized actions are just not taking off. This will solve issues with a lot of medium cartridges like 284, 6.5x55, all x57's.
Thinking out loud..... wouldn't a necked up 6.5PRC case make a fantastic 30 cal cartridge? between 308win and 300wm.
I was never lucky with a 270, don't like them, don't want one. Not been keen on a 30-06 either. Many others think the same if you look at the dwindling numbers of these.

agreed , except i wouldn't limit the creedmoor to smaller deer since i have taken the biggest norfolk/suffolk reds with my creedmoor and factory 140gr ammo out to 400m , bullet placement is key and an easy to shoot accurate calibre helps that.

Isn’t that pretty close to 300WSM?

I bet if David Lloyd was here, he’d be chambering old mausers in the PRC’s

Yes, but it does not have a good reputation on boar and in some places they won't let you shoot boar with it. The hunters on the continent will not have confidence..... For a big part of them a 300wm is marginal, the 8x68S just about right for large red stags..... shooting skills not up to much etc...
I am with you and have taken two Sika over 600m with the CM, think it is fantastic for the 3-400m range. The 6.5PRC will have just that bit extra for those shots.

I had never looked up if someone had done it before. Just looked and the 30 6.5PRC seems to be done in F Class. They say about 10gr less powder than WSM meaning quite a bit away.
