My introduction & 7x64 reloads

Hi all, thank you for allowing me to join. I frequently search the web for reloading tips and often come across posts on this forum regarding similar topics. My name is Brett, from a small town in southern Queensland, Australia. I mainly help out farmers in western and south western Qld, hunting wild pigs and feral cats, both quite a nuisance in this country. I'd love to get into hunting deer but opportunities are a bit limited here so pigs it is. My favourite cartridges are the 25-06 and 30-06, I've also recently purchased a nice Sako 85 in 7x64 so working on better loads for that. I'm using PPU cases but finding early signs of pressure with minimum loads of 2209/h4350. I measured the cases the other night, coming in at around 63gns of water which I believe is low compared to others. If anyone has any information on other case capacity I'd love to hear it, my other limited choices are Norma and S&B, thanks in advance!

I use and have reloaded the very similar 7x65r. A smaller case will give more pressure. H4350 is quite fast, i would try 4831 type burn speed, but depends on the bullet you are using.

Nowt wrong with PPU - and its cheap. Norma is better and lasts longer but quite a bit more expensive.

Hi Brett and welcome!
Here are a few recipes for the 7x64:
- Hornady SST 139 grs (or Nosler Partition 140 grs) + 55 grs of Norma 204 + CCI Large Rifle Magnum OAL 83.1 mm (3.27 ins.)
- Nosler Partition 140 grs rest as above
- Nosler Ballistic Tip 140 grs rest as above.
The data above are relatively old (20152016) and to be used with prudence, having Norma modified the powder composition.

Thanks mate, yeah I was thinking that, being slightly smaller than others. And yes, I should look at 4831, I had bought some 2217 for my 7mm rem mag when I had it so have been testing that using 160gn pills, a good SD but the velocity is down a bit, not that it's all about speed 🙂 I might look.at the Norma cases. Cheers

Thanks mate, unfortunately they don't bring Norma powders into this country, hence I've had to use 2209 for those exact Nosler pills you're using. Am getting an average of 2728fps with 50.7 gns, only slightly more than my 7-08. I might grab some Norma cases after my next hunt and see how they go for capacity. Cheers

I managed to get just over 3000fps with N550 and N560 and 140gr TTSX in mine

Loads were beyond book levels by a fair bit , but no concerning pressure signs

I won’t share the load data for the normal reasons but the powders seemed to work well in the catridge

Thanks mate, that's moving alright and great there's no signs of pressure, i had pressure signs on my starting loads. What cases are you using, any idea of their water volume in grains?

Checking my notes I worked up the 560 load in Barnes brass and the 550 one in s&B brass

Sorry no idea if the H2O capacity on either.

That's a very soft and slow load for 140s/2209 in either the 7x64 or a jager blocked 7x65R. If you have the tools and the ability to monitor pressure, there may be room to move.
Check out blaserbuds.com for a fair bit of Aus. experience and data re those cartridges

Yeah my thoughts too, a tad slow, hence I was looking at the case size. No tools to monitor, just the flattening of primers and some marks on the case head. And thanks, will do 🙂

Anyone who likes the 25/06 & 30/06 is A OK in my book. Howdy from Oregon.
Oregon hey, from what I hear it's a beautiful place. Yeah that 25-06 and I go way back, I feel bad if I go off for a hunt without it. It's an old school Savage 110, with a mag and can also be top loaded, a great hunting rifle. The 30-06 goes well for knocking pigs on their asses though 😀
