Hi all,

I'm looking for your suggestions with regard to some cheaper backup 10x42 binos. I'll be getting some LRF 10x42s in spring next year (bday present) but in the meantime have a two stalking trips planned for Autumn and currently no binos...

What would you suggest for a couple of hundred quid that will tide me over this trip and then stay in the glovebox or be passed to family/friends as backups in the future?

Thanks,
Rory

I and my stepson have a pair of hellios 8x42 . I have a pair just for clove box use
Cracking for the money about 80.00 at the time. I also have meopta 8x42 and 10x 42 swaro

Vortex diamond back 8 x 42.
I use the vortex bantam 6.5 x 32 most of the time. There small and the image more than good enough and there about 80quid. Excellent value. My diamond backs sit on the cupboard most of the time.

If you're getting some "proper" 10x42s soon then I'd not double up with a cheap pair the same size / magnification. What about something compact for glovebox or going in the pocket to compliment the 10x42s when they arrive?

I've got some Vortex 8x32 that live in the truck and are more than good enough. In fact, I'm always amazed at the quality and very handy to put in a pocket if you want to travel light.

I would second this. 8x32 are very good little all round bins. Light in weight but very good at last light.

Little pocket 8x20 are also really useful and even lighter and more compact. But are just getting a little too small for serious long time scanning type work. Very good for looking at that bird or a buck.

My suggestion would be to go as good a quality as you can afford as they will last a lifetime. And an 8x32 I am sure will become a very favourite pair of binoculars when you don’t want to lug the heavier range finding bins.

Strongly recommend a set of 8x 25 or 32 as you’ll get the mag you want for a quick check but fantastic to have in your pocket when out and about. Zeiss or vortex
