Sellers backing out on sales

I have had quite a few "transactions" with Stalking Directory members, both buying and selling and I have never had a problem either way. Sometimes we need to put a bit of trust in other members, and if we can not do that then maybe we ought to rethink our mindset! I raise my hat to all who I have had dealings with on this forum as my "trust" has never been ill founded!

Wondering if anyone else has had issues in recent times with sellers on SD committing to a sale then subsequently backing out, either pre payment, or post payment.

I had a deal on a rifle fall through a few weeks ago for various reasons despite the seller giving me his word that the rifle was mine, and refusing a deposit to secure it.

I’ve just had a deal on a mincer fall through too, despite it being paid for immediately. Seller cited the item not working to which my response was that I’d repair it. My suspicion in this instance is that it’s going to a higher bidder.

In both instances, the selling member subsequently deleted the thread relating to the item.

Seems to be happening more and more these days on SD, has anyone else had shared experiences? Is SD getting worse for people honouring their word? It feels like the Classifieds section is slowly turning into Facebook Marketplace in some instances. A few years ago, word was bond.

Thoughts?
I believe that the state of our current economy is pretty terrible at present ? folks feel they have to sell something to pay their bills, Then manage to see some light at the end of the tunnel and back out knowing there might not be the money coming back on stream to re-buy in the future maybe?
Trade who are buying guns and such in quantity are likely selling into other Nations like the USA where there is an upturn . All we get here is more taxes and other bills
Anyhow , its not like Labour will get another term for a very long time (if ever)

Always positive dealings for me so far, met two members face to face for items and couldn't have been more genuine guys,
Also other members who are not 'well known', admittedly I was apprehensive with some deals (buying), but I always do a bit of digging for info on other party incase things go tits up!

the hilarious (but annoying ant the time) side of this is the "I'll have it if its a ....." brigade. Clearly this is like going into a shop asking for milk, and then being disappointed that it's not chocolate milk. I take little consolation that they are wasting their time as well as mine. Strange people.

I had a blaser mount for sale on here and got a pm with a mobile number, rang up, he was buying a whole blaser set up but didnt know where to start

Well the chap has now found everything he wanted and has turned out to be an amazing friend with an open mind on shooting, to be honest it was pretty refreshing for a newbie i was pleased to be of help Amazing outward going newbie to stalking brilliant

BUT i have had a couple not so pleasant 🥹 so it all evens out 👍

Well as the site grows and grows, we are bound to get some members who cant be honest. You would get the same if the advert was in a magazine, or on Face ache. The vast majority of transactions in classifieds are trouble free, but like everything in life, there will always be the exception.

I'm still considering charging to use classifieds, as a way of maybe preventing the odd idiot ruining it for others. But I am resisting for now. At least if they have to pay, it may put off the odd idiot using the classifieds. But I don't want to ruin it for everyone else who is decent and honourable, which 99.9% are on here.

A few tried to tell me why I should sell it to them for cheaper because of some spurious reason.

On the whole SD is a good place to sell and indeed buy

It's the 'I might be interested' idiots that I take umbrage at. Either you're interested, or you're not.

It's the "if only" folk that irritate me:

If only you were nearer...
If only I was nearer...
If only I had a FAC....
If only I hadn't just bought one...
If only it was bigger....
If only it was smaller...
If only it was in .270.....
If only it was in .308...
If only it was in [insert any calibre here other than what it actually is]....
If only I wasn't married....
If only my bitch hadn't just had 19 puppies....
If only I had somewhere to put it....

....I'd have had that off you!

You missed out -

'If only I wasn't a timewasting cockwomble'

And there's also the ones who post "wanted" ads for rifles and other equipment that they've got absolutely no intention of buying, (usually big calibres) who probably haven't even got a FAC, just because it makes them feel important to do so.

(Incidentally, before you ask, yes I am actually wanting to buy a camera).

One issue is the deletion of ads. This should not be allowed. I bought a seater and when I went to use it, it was defective. The seller had deleted his ad. Sellers deleting ads should be banned.

Nothing but good experiences on SD both buying and selling.

What amuses me is particularly shotguns, the vendor doesn’t list length of pull/choke etc etc – some believe it’s their life work to spot these omissions and ask questions.

Given the price other websites charge for gun sales a £5 an ad would be a bargain.

I have to admit that I have once or twice commented that if it was closer... when it was something that could or would not be posted.... however it shows to others a) that it may well a good price and b) it bumps it back up if someone is looking at new posts rather than going through the forum.

besides if people only made comments with a real good point to them, then there would only be a handful of comments made each month
:)

Not sure about charging for ads, but it doesn't get round the problem of dishonest buyers. Never had a problem buying or selling stuff on here.

David.
