.22LR/.17 HMR - Same moderator?

A landowner friend has just swopped his ancient BRNO .22LR for a new .17HMR and whilst mounting the scope and setting it up for him he asked if his old i.e elderly unbranded .22 mod. would be ok on the “much more powerful” .17HMR.
I have a .22LR on my own .17 and have put a fortune’s worth of bullets through it but for the life of me I honestly cannot remember the technically correct answer…..
Help!

I personally wouldn’t , get you land owner friend to put his hand in his pocket and get himself something like a wildcat panther or if his got deep pockets and short arms buy a SAK .

Either is rated for the two calibres .

.17HMR will go through a .22 moderator, but won't be as effective as a properly sized one.

I have Wildcat Panthers & a Wildcat Evo, and have diffusers in .17 & .22 for both, so good to try different combos.

The Evo is probably a bit OTT, (but also goes on my .223), but a friend can be in the next paddock, and says he doesn't hear the .17HMR going off, only the "slap" as it hits the rabbit! I tend to only put it on the varmint barrelled 457, as it is a bit of a lump.

Neither are cheap, but I do like that I can strip them, pop them in the small ultrasonic cleaner, and reassemble.

Rimfires are pretty filthy, and the .17HMR seems to leave a lot of gritty rubbish in the mod that I want to get rid of. The mod gets taken off straight away, and the crown wiped with a patch, and then the mod can dry out off of the rifle.

Aye I thought it would be ok but with three times the power there has got to be a lot of additional pressure with the .17 way beyond that of the .22 …..
or am I just over cautious?

At least according to Wikipedia, maximum pressure from 22LR is 24,000psi.

Maximum pressure from 17hmr is 26,000psi.

Amazing , I’d never of guessed that.
I think you’re automatically thrown by the fpe difference of the 2 and not the pressure generated
👍

I would stress, it's Wikipedia data 😅 But agree, although, I vaguely remember being lectured by someone at a reloading course about how the design of the 22LR makes in ineffective at actually getting to those higher pressures...

I'm sure one of the more learned will be along shortly to explain and correct!

I would not go for a 17 mod especially if the 22 one is ok and , it makes no real difference I did this when i added a 17 . Not a fan of 17hmr personally though chucked it in within a year for the 22 hornet.

Use it as an excuse to get a new moderator, I have a SAK on mine which I find fine, if they did a calibre specific version, I'd buy it. I have a .17 wildcat on my .17rem and that is very effective
