4x4 pickup tyres (18" options)

That time again and I need a new set of tyres on the pickup. I've been running those Radar Renegades for the last 30k or so. Still a fair bit of tread but wet performance has suddenly dropped off a cliff - understeering all over the place and time to change them ahead of winter. They have been OK - not blown away so not rushing to fit another set (but haven't ruled them out totally).

I'll probably go less aggressive this time and a bit more road focussed as I have the quad for when it gets properly muddy but I do still need to be able to get around offroad without getting stuck every 5 mins. Plus we do live fairly rural and high(ish) in the Peak District so winter performance is important.

BFG are out the question on price alone (£250ish per tyre in 18") so available options locally seem to be:
  • General AT3 (wasn't a fan of AT2 - kept getting stuck in the slightest bit of mud but appreciate it's a different tyre)
  • Yokohama Geoloander X-AT G016 - quite like the look of these?
  • Kuhmo MT51 - had these in the past and would rate them alongside the Renegades - ok but not amazing (wore unevenly and terrible tyre noise past about 20k miles)
  • Kuhmo AT52 - quite like the look of these and only about £100/corner and have the 3PMSF winter rating
Anything else folk are using and rate?

I have just replaced my 4x4's 18" tyres with budget priced Comforser RT CF9000 ATs. I have done perhaps 300 miles since changing and am very happy with the quiet, grippy ride.

Relatively little true off-road work in those 300 miles, more like a few hundred meters of muddy fields and lanes just off the tar. All good.

IIRC, I paid £116 per tyre, fitted and balanced. My guess is that they will wear quicker than BFG, but I did not like the BFG wet road performance and so happy for that trade-off.

Currently have cooper stt on work vehicles which I rate better and longer lasting than bfg, although not your price range, many many years ago I had Insa turbo on a defender, I really liked them

Another thumbs up for the comforser all terrain , fitted on Navara , good off road , good on road not noisy , always had Bfg A/t but was quoted over £700 fo a set , these are a copy of the bfg and so far so good at a lot less money

Just changed mine back from BFG KO3s to General AT3 grabbers.

World apart in wet weather driving grip and road noise.

AT3 considerably better than the old AT2.

I’ve done 100k miles in my hilux now, 80k on BFG ATs which was six tyres (the fronts wear slower than the rears) and I’ve just moved to Goodyear wrangler all terrains. They’re great tyres. Nowhere near as aggressive looking but they do the job admirably and four cost the same as two of the BFGs. They were on offer at Halfords of all places.

To be honest this is a little bit like saying I’ve a .243 slot to fill what should I buy ?
Tyres for most on here who probably do a little bit of soft off road driving trails , fields, margins etc is really as personal choice there’s not really a bad all terrain tyre on the market , you will get alot of these are great , these are useless , these are noisy etc
Personally I’d go with what’s within you’re budget and you can get easily
As I’ve said I put a full set of comforser a/t “s on the Navara and have been very happy with them , good pattern , reasonable price and have worn well so far ( about 15,000 mile )

I ran BFGs and found their performance to be extremely disappointing compared to more modern patterns, i took them off well before they were close to worn and was glad to see the back of them. I did run the older version of the Yoko Geolanders and they were good on the road and (given sensible driving) in the snow and wet etc., much better than the BFGs they were also pretty reasonable off the road and I had them across some wet and slimy mud (not deep though) that I honestly think the BFGs might not have crossed. Recently I've been running the Pirelli All Terrain Plus tyres and have found them excellent on and off road. Pirelli claim to have designed them to address the "common" problems such as wet grass and although they are great on the road, in the wet, and in the snow, they also look quite aggressive if looks are important. The only problem may be the cost as they were quite expensive but I'd have another set.

GG At3's on my Disco 4
BFG Ko's on my defender.

i rate both tyres. done over 120k on General Grabbers on various vehicles and do like them

I'm on my third set of Falken Wildpeak AT3s now - 2 sets on the FL2 and now the same on the Discovery Sport. I have found their off-road characteristics very reasonable but on road behaviour excellent, even in snow. I had General Grabber AT3 on the FL2 before these and had sidewall damage issues on 4 before I moved to the Falkens. Last set came with a discount through BASC membership :thumb:

I had BFG AT's on the Shogun that aquaplaned.
BFG MT's on the Hilux when I brought it. Lethal on the wet on tarmac.
I swapped these out for Geolanders and I'm now on my second set.
Good on tarmac and quiet too, ok off road, never managed to get stuck yet even with a trailer on.

Where did you buy them to get the BASC discount?

General Grabber AT3s. Have found them to be a good compromise. By coincidence, just yesterday they got me out of a really, really muddy field/swamp. Locked the rear diff, and the tyres performed better than expected.
