Out last night.

Went over this morning to recover the fox from Wednesday night, #6,558.
I like to keep the place tidy.
I called the shot a perfect heart / bib shot, and was proved correct in my wind call also. This years full grown Vixen, I almost forgot on the way back, to get a pic towards the side of the excavator from where I took it from.IMG_2825.JPGIMG_2826.webp

Out of interest, why didn't you pick it on Wednesday?

Nick, That bottom field of Rush grass is one I had never walked before, (600+ acres on the farm) & it's not been topped while I have had the ground, it is extremely wet at times according to the farmer's son ... So discretion being the order of the night, I elected to do a daylight recovery, rather than sink either the truck or myself.:norty:
The reason the excavator is there is to re instate some drainage, He's started at the road side ditch on clearing it out, to send everything out to a lake in the distance.

Well I ventured out on Wed night first dry night in yonks, got set up only to hear the banging and clanging of the chap in the cottage working on his JCB, but he stopped just after 9pm so all went quiet , I sat there watch the resident hedgehog doing it rounds lol, then noticed one in the next field tried different calls not interested then I could see it was eating something but was in a slight dip , got lined up for the shot app 116yds sent the 55gn sleeping pill on its way and heard the resounding thump , but could not see anything on the thermal, sat for another hour or so scanning around but nothing decided to put gear in car and go look for the fallen , but went crashing down and smashed my knee on a boulder, decided to leave at that point , went down today to find this young dog in a slight dip it had been feeding on a dead ewe.IMG-20250919-WA0001.webp

Knee ok?

I got a quick look at a passing fox last night, very quick on its feet, looked to be on a mission ... too much farm stock on the field to go into a running leader shot, however, I enjoyed a close look at the Blackpool tower all lit up in it's white bulbs with the Lieca's, Winter hill mast, & the syncronised reds on the wind farms out at sea, the light breeze evaporated to zero, no clouds at all promised the frost that was evident this morning.
A very satisfying nature watch, three species of owl & numerous sorts of bats ... Lapwings still flitting over the fields, & complete abscence of the moon (New).

Lovely, beats telly any day.

Arrived at the ground an hour before dark , got set up waiting for dark. 3minutes into calling and a fox came through the rushes and straight in the bag.

2 nd stand 2 foxes came in behind us and hung up , a lip squeak brought them both in 😄

The next few hours was very quiet , no wind and temp dropping with the ground underfoot now soaking with a grass frost.

Last stand of the night had a fox climb along a fallen tree to get over the fence and shot at around 50 yds.

So with 4 vixen cubs decided to head off home with the temp dropping to zero on the way home 🥶❄️
