Good reason

Does anyone have some inspiration for me?

I need good reason for a 7x57 I have put a one-for-one in for (gave away a 22) so I better get my story straight.

I have (with their real use):
243 with NV for last light fallow and fox
6.5x55 for gentlemanly stalks
270 which lives at my mums in Scotland (although in truth it will come down south soon)
7mm r m that desperately needs a rebarrel.

So I assume I need the 7x57 for dedicated lead free bullets and wild boar? And I fess up that the 7mm rem mag is useless until re barrelled which I plan to do when funds allow? TBH I could have the rem mag taken down to action only by someone.

The good reason really is that I’d like one and it would get used. But never sure that’s good enough reason.

Have you thought about joining a local shooting club that has access to longer ranges? That would be a starting good reason.
You could just be honest and say what you said above - you want one and it will get used as an alternate calibre for the hunting you do. Depends how well you know your FEO.

Tbf I don’t really have time for a club as I’m out shooting deer whenever I get time.

My FEO is pretty reasonable so I expect honesty is best policy as you have said. Just wondered if anyone had any creative ideas (or had some comedy ones!)

Personally Id say you have good reason for most of those, but on the face of it you need different reasons for 7x57, 6.5x55 and the 7mm rem.
- the good reason for the 243 is dedicated nv gun
- You have good reason to store / share a rifle at a stalking ground that is far away

Could one be for woodland (short barreled / low mag scope / zeroed for heavy bullet), one for open ground (the opposite)? Maybe one for daytime foxing, wild boar or dedicated lead free.

I wouldn't mention the 7mm being useless until re-barrelled. It still technically needs a separate good reason.

Excellent thank you!

Good reason is you're presumably an upstanding citizen who already is considered not to be a risk to the public or the peace. You wish to own a rifle for lawful use and for it's intended purpose of shooting things.
That's perfectly good reason and doesn't require coming up with "a story".
Just plain old honest and simple.

Use your own reasons, not someone else's.

If you have to make up a reason then you don't have a reason.

You risk a lot by making stuff up. Doesn't look good when some astute FEO asks a specific question and you can't answer truthfully.

It's wrong and the system should allow a 'just because I want it' reason but it doesn't.

Good answer, when the FEO asks him a question and his reply starts with "errr" then he has no "good reason"

I would hazard a guess that quite a lot of FAC holders have rifles that are held for personal desires rather than necessity. It’s just where the marker drops between the two that is good reason, and hearing other people’s good reasons and how they have been interpreted or considered by different FEOs has been useful.

Thanks all.

I always just put down ‘deer management’, they can’t argue back

Well they can, and they do...

"S62, you already have three 'deer calibre (sic) rifles', why do you need another?"

Funny enough, it was also for a .275 (7x57).

My 'good reason':- I have two rifles for Scotland (.308 and .375) and (now) two for South of the Wall (.243 and .275).

When I travel I will always take two rifles to ensure that any trips do not have a 'single point of failure' - and there is always a 'backup' system available. At the time of my application for this particular variation, one of my rifles was 'off sick' at the Gun Doctor's and serendipitously added weight to my rather splendid argument.

Do not lie to the FLD.

Lying shows a lack of understanding of the legislation, a lack of imagination in interpreting that legislation, and a proclivity to demonstrate yourself as a manifestly dishonest individual who is perhaps not suitable to own any firearm?

Speak to your FEO. They are (in the main) decent folk who are there to help you.

This is very helpful thank you.

I didn’t / don’t ever intend to lie to the FEO but more to understand what uses I have that I hadn’t considered were actually good reason. EG travelling with two rifles - I would do that if travelling further afield, hadn’t considered it was a good reason so that’s a really helpful result from this post. And my 7mm rm being sick (it really is much to my annoyance) as one of yours was, seemed to carry some weight. So thanks again.

My FEO has always been reasonable as have most I’ve dealt with - I agree.

Mine was simple with just one rifle, I put a drone 10 (N/V) on the .243 used it for foxing/stalking, put in a variation for .270
with "culling large species of deer" as the good reason. (have reds on the ground)
Sent in paper work fac came back with slot for rifle & mod.
I can't honestly say I would not need a third forth fifth rifle as they cover anything in the UK.
It must be the Henry VIII in a lot of stalkers who can afford lots of rifles but not six wives
