Out last night.

#74 #75

Was going to go rabbitting last night but at last minute changed my mind and decided to have a look to a sheep farm that I've neglected this year , so swapped HMR for ..22/250

Lovely night and with the wind being easterly it was perfect for where I wanted to set up , a patch of rushy ground next to a copse on my east boundary.

On approaching I picked up a heat source at the edge of the copse , a fox was heading away from me so I gave it lip squeak and it turned round and duly trotted in like lassie , shot at 98 yds after stopping it .

Set out the foxpro hoping it had a mate about. 40 minutes later a fox appeared behind me to vixen on heat call . Shot that one at 98 yds too ...strange.

On collecting them turned out to be 2 big dog foxes 😁Really glad I went foxing instead of rabbitting now.

Yeah, a couple of years ago, I tipped a bucket full of rat carcasses out on the bottom field. It was probably late January, easily 50 rats in the bucket, kicked them about a bit to scatter a few, next morning when I walked the dogs, they had all gone. I've known them load up an earth with grub like they had cubs to feed at this time of year, maybe a bit later..
An old keeper who had dug a few earths once told me its not uncommon for a fox to load up an earth, he reckoned young cubs were weaned on a diet of semi rotten meat, as it was easier for them to digest.

Rabbits again last night , not much wind and pretty light so they were a bit skittish but managed 22.
On arrival there are some sheep feeders next to a hedge and I spied a rat so set up 25 yds from the feeder. Said rat appeared and got whacked , waited and ended up shooting 7 in total. HMR certainly smacks them 🤣

Frustrating night tonite - usual hill (score 46 since January) showed nada after an hour of calling in -2 degrees - remind me to bring Lady FB’s crimbo present of battery operated handwarmers next time which incidentally were brilliant on the club’s annual golf outing….
Anyhoo - down to the lower fields, set up the wee caller and waited…..
Ten minutes later thermal showed a fox coming in at my 9 o’clock and crossing for the wind. Rascal clocked me but managed to get the Zulus V2 set up and acquire the fox for a shot at about 120 - missed! Unusually on the shot it came back into the field and gave me a second chance - missed! Bloody hell! Like what is going on here? Acquired it for the third time just as it got offside - BUGGER!
Now, not making excuses but why does the Zulus V2 have the on/standby button at precisely the opposite end of the button line i.e. furthest point away when the same V1 button is right next to your nose? Call me old-fashioned or just old but that is dumb, like really dumb!
