The off hand challenge thread.

We will be back at off hand on Monday

We will be playing ‘Killer’ - from the old dart game

However with .22 LR at 50m

To become a killer you must hit a 1” dot

To ‘kill’ your opponent you must hit their 2” dot 3 times

Had an hour's plinking out to 200yds this afternoon with the 22.
Shot 200 plus rounds all off hand in this wind, well I did get out of the worst of it.
Good practice, I was knackered towards the end of it.
Anyway, I've noticed some on here think a 22 heeled bullet remains as a heeled bullet when shot. They don't. Good ol' pressure fixes the back end of a 22.

They are my modified bullets after a 200yd flight.

Flying Jackdaw at about 25 yards - Milbro Hunting Catapult (scourge of anything flying and err….walking) and a ball bearing. Damned thing landed on my neighbour’s roof and squawked endlessly - most embarrassing!
I reckon that was about 1963 and I can still see the bird folding in mid-air - delight immediately followed by “what the hell am I gonna do now?”….

Done similar. Shot flying pigeon with caty from my backyard. It fell on to the road just as I could hear a motorbike come along. I thought "oh wtf". The bike stopped just as I let the dog out of the gate to retrieve it. Dog done the job. The yard was totally concealed by a 6 foot wall and gate

So had planned to try off hand with the .22RF , but out stalking roe yesterday and forgot my quad sticks. I am so dependent on them now that I had thought about returning home for them before I decided, ‘ what did I do before them’.
Went stalking found two roe tucked in the woods, so I tried leaning on a tree, deer about 70 yards away , should have been a doddle but missed over the back, and the deer run off.
Kept stalking , and found a doe and two followers in the field trying to return to the woods after the disturbance. Doe stops looks at me about 80 yards away I raise the rifle , nothing to lean on, good back stop but can’t stop the crosshairs swaying and the deer run on.
Half an hour latter find seven deer bedded down out the wind in a field corner. Walk down the opposite side of the hedge into them and discover one on my side of the hedge staring straight at me. Get to 40 yards nothing to lean on so take the shot, low neck and deer down. Other deer stand up but don’t run, gap in the hedge shows a deers head again about 40 yards, second deer down.
I will now practice with the RF as I think off hand is a skill we all had years ago and the advent of more kit has deskilled us.
Truly think it’s a skill we should all maintain for the enjoyment of our sport.

Have to admit I have never been a fan of sticks, prefer a fixed tripod if having to take a long shot standing. Unfortunately the only range I can practice any offhand shooting I only get to visit 2 or 3 times a year, but last visit I managed to hit a 6" plate at 300 yards with my .223 Straight Pull offhand. 13/20 shots. Will have to see if I can do the same again when I go in March!
