Acceptable accuracy

Hmmm.
Lots of interesting views about what is acceptable from a rifle but let’s stretch it a bit and factor in different scenarios especially YOU - the man or woman or….. behind the rifle ….
Sooo your firearm of choice is clearly lazer-like but what do you consider a shooter’s acceptable accuracy to be:-
1. Off the bench;
2. Off a bipod: and
3. Off sticks - twin, triple or quad?
Honest replies only chaps…

Lots of people claim sub inch (or better) at 100 yards/200 yards etc, but I don’t believe that they can do it consistently under field conditions. If it were true then head shooting deer would be the norm.

And that is exactly why any of my target shooting, steel ringing or load development is done in the field and only with kit I use in the field.

Nothing posh, nothing gucci. We can all get stable on a bench and be comfy on a table with all the time in the world. But that ain't shooting at live quarry is it šŸ˜‚

Off sticks unless on the hill!

When doing the badger cull test it was to get 3 rounds in a 3 inch circle at 70yrds. Some of you will scoff at that but there were quite a few who couldn't. I often think of that when out. Id say that as long as you can hit a 3inch circle for fox or 4inch for deer then when you can't, then that's your max range. That might be 100 yards or 500+
I have seen a few fail the test.

I recently did a shooting test comprising of:

100 mtrs 2ā€ gong 2 shots off sticks
150 mtrs 4ā€ gong 2 shots off sticks
200 mtrs 6ā€ gong 2 shots off sticks

I’ve done it a few times with various different rifles and in different conditions - throw in some weather and it makes it interesting.

In all honesty, everybody has their own opinion of accuracy, but if you’re hitting three shots in an inch at 100 m, you’re good to go, it’s DMQ standard not that that means anything these daysšŸ™ˆ just get out there and enjoy your stalking!

The scientific way to know if your rifle/load is any good is to see how it does if you bolt the action down tight to a big slab of concrete, and then fire a few groups.
We have one rifle, a well used M595 .223, which has put 5 shots in a 5/16" group at 200yds fired prone off a bipod......this had been re-built as a single shot target rifle with a 30" s/steel barrel.

Everyone's expectations are different...I'm happy if I can consistently shoot 1 MOA over a range session at 300yds, which is usually 7 or 8 5-shot groups on electronic targets.
On a really good day, one or two of these groups might be 0.5 MOA, and I end up buying lunch.....

What sticks exactly ?

What sticks exactly ?
Quad sticks I guess!

Except in my opinion eating all that ammunition that’s too much faff!

Used to nothing but quad sticks for well over 10 years didn’t have a fifth leg then don’t need a fifth leg now!

Didn’t need to waste bullets either
