Out last night.

#2
Went out to look for fallow but I'm struggling!
There has been reports of dog walker dogs running them about and some sheep have been brought in.
However as I was leaving I found a bucket on a bank waiting for the sun to rise for a warm.
-7 this morning here.
Before that I heard a dog fox bark so I got in position and squealed but he never showed from within the wood.
Shortly later a vixen came trotting by so I mouse squeaked and it turned my way.
Eventually I stopped it and the lil 17 did it again.
I sent Jess to find it, she does enjoy that.

Cracking start to the year 👏

I started keeping a shooting diary last year, and its something I will keep going this year. Maybe when I lose the rest of my marbles in later years it will help remind me who I am! haha! doubtful.
Had a count up and 75 for me in 2025, possibly should be a couple more, as there are a few blank pages where I probably forgot to fill the entry for that day/night in.
I was brutally honest with myself, and reading back through I missed a few, mostly through hesitating then rushing the shot. CZ 457 .22lr accounted for a fair few fox.
Diary entries don't have to be long winded, but I note which rifle used, range of shots taken or at least a best guess, and if a dog or vixen.

The boss on this estate got me to keep a record of vermin taken, not exactly a diary but enlightening all the same. I was truly astonished at the end of the first season here at the amount, I even counted again 🤣
Plus the boss can see trends, how bird counts vary, amount of protected species seen, that sort of thing. Interesting thing to do, not just about numbers.

Do you just keep note of anytime you take any type of vermin?

Yes bud, got a little notebook in the Gator, ring top job. Anything I shoot or take out of traps/snares I put in the book.
Adding up is easy, it's 2's or 3's, unless it's like the time I had 193 crows/jackdaws over decoys. Genuinely surprised at the amount at the end of the season, some days I remember simply because of the numbers ie the crows/jackdaws above on the tenant dairy farm's silage clamp.

Just ordered a page to day A6 diary I'll keep by cabinet & a little detective notepad for daily gator. 👍

With the shoot winding down (2 days left) I’ve been feeding my “keepers treat” a small pond at the top of the estate that only holds water over winter.
Been feeding a mix of maize and wheat titbits whatever I have left over from a hopper feed run.
Had a teal for 10 shots🤣 I definitely need more practice! Would have stayed longer but forgot my cans and even with my socks in my ears thought I’d save my lugg holes.

Having it stir fried for tomorrow’s supper.

T.

1st fox of the year, old collie was out in his kennel giving the ( there's a fox out here bark) grabbed my habroks on the table and a quick look down in the field and fox there sat up in the moonlight, came in and grabbed the rifle, never that quick is it ...by time you get batteries sorted etc, nipped out around the house so I had a good rest on the wood gate, scanned around and couldn't see anything, gave a couple squeaks and I heard something beside me in the crispy snow and thought it's my old cat that has a habit of following me around outside , looked down and the damn fox was in the garden beside me about 3 mtrs away 😅, I daren't move , he looked at me for a few seconds and slipped under the post and rail fence , he heard the safety catch go off and stopped for a look back at about 15 yards, last thing he heard !
