So maybe 308 with 18" barrel would be a good compromise? If you know how to shoot them
Shirt light 308’s can be notoriously jumpy, if you’re not learned in handling 30’cals in shorties, you might quickly blame the rifle or ammo for crappy groups
I gave you the pictorial answer thenWill be woodland stalking with the occasional open field between parcels of woodland.
Are you hoping to use a moderator? The trend in some parts of the world is to go short on the barrel in order to accommodate a large (often heavy) moderator without increasing overall length. The mod helps mitigate the increased recoil from the short barrel. So maybe 308 with 18" barrel would be a good compromise?
As I say, 20” is a good compromise without losing too much velocity. The barrel doesn't need to be that short 20" would be fine, I didn't want a 24" flag pole on my back was all and didn't know if getting a 20" 6.5 is worth it or whether you can get another calibre to perform the same with a shorter barrel.
Mine is not so light. If you know how to shoot them

Yeah I'm getting that impression ha everyone has a favourite and it seems there's no right answer. I will be using a moderator so maybe the compromise you suggested would be fine, puts me back up to the 20" barrel which then opens up the 6.5cm againAre you hoping to use a moderator? A small, light moderator on a slightly longer (20 inch factory spec) barrel might be a better compromise.
Ultimately there's no right answer, and you'll get as many opinions as there are members here!
Yeah I wouldn't mind if I was in the open but through the woods you catch all the branches you try and duck under or have to keep taking the rifle off your shoulder and I just don't want to do that if I can avoid it.As I say, 20” is a good compromise without losing too much velocity.
Mind you all of my stalking is done with 24-26” barrel with Ase Utra mods, but I’m never in woodland so like all the velocity I can get.
I'd say carry muzzle-down, but that's a whole different a̶r̶g̶u̶m̶e̶n̶t̶ ... c̶a̶n̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶m̶s̶ ... discussionYeah I wouldn't mind if I was in the open but through the woods you catch all the branches you try and duck under or have to keep taking the rifle off your shoulder and I just don't want to do that if I can avoid it.

Thats fair enough, I’ve just bought a 20” .308, neee to get it conditioned for deer and will be interesting to see how it compares in the field. Would love some woodland stalking to give me the need for a short rifle!Yeah I wouldn't mind if I was in the open but through the woods you catch all the branches you try and duck under or have to keep taking the rifle off your shoulder and I just don't want to do that if I can avoid it.
Same thing as a .270, no point of lots of extra powder if you’re just firing it through the end of the mod.16-18 inch 6.5 prc would be the same as a 22 in needsmore id imagine
For walking with when stalking, a Blaser Attaché orHi all, I've been reading through tons of posts and haven't really found what I'm looking for...
I'm new to stalking, been a few times and used and estate rifle but am looking to put in for a variation so I can get my own.
It seems .270 .. 6.5CR .. .308 are the most common (from the dozens of posts I've read) but what I would like is a compact/short/light rifle as don't spend time in a high seat, I'm walking for hours.
I like the idea of the flat shooting, low recoil 6.5 but how short can you go in the barrel?
I've seen plenty of posts about 18 or even 16inch 308 but then you have the loopy trajectory which is like the avoid.
Then there's the 270 which I have been using and although I'm not fussed about a bit of recoil as I've only taken 4 shots max on a day, it would be nice to keep the animal in the scope once I've pulled the trigger.
So any advice on calibre / barrel length / make and model suggestions based on the above?
Thanks
