Feeder For Deer

Hi
Set up a feeder like 2 weeks ago, with a camera facing it. Filled it with wheat and seen deer passing a few yards away, but none are touching it — they seem more interested in the leaves nearby.
What do you guys use in feeders to attract them better or to consume feeder? Keen to see how they react over time.

Thanks

Aniseed works!

If you do it strong enough, it’ll also mask the human scent, bloody works!

I’ve had reds clear two feeders of 250 kg in one weekend.

rather than feed per se, I would aniseed mineral licks - last a good long time. From a health perspective additional minerals give ruminants the ability to better digest poorer quality nutrition and hence make better use of it.

I have used these in the past

Why do you want to attract them? As feeders can increase disease spread, the only decent reasons are to see how many there are and/or to move them to a safe point to shoot
To be honest, people just use them to manoeuvre deer into places where they want to shoot them, people are just desperate to pull the trigger!

Under the blank excuse of deer management😂😂😂

I've found the red Mole Valley blocks to work well over time and they're cheap :thumb: Their plain salt blocks are untouched!

Out of interest, why did you use one?
Because there was over 100 reds in the close area , the permission was 250 acres with only 100 acres shootable and no one was shooting them, so we use the Feed to lure them in, but never shot them at the Feed site always too and away from, and to be fair, it’s not done **** all difference to the numbers,

There still over 100 reds in the area, that year we shot just shy of 40 and not beat it since!

And before anybody says it’s getting a night license, I certainly won’t lower my standards and get one, I won’t use digit or thermal scopes, I won’t lower my standards!

Sounds like a well thought out reasonable management strategy. Doesn’t really line up with the statement the poster made in #7 on this thread 😂

What deer are you trying to attract? If it's Roe there's lovely spring growth which will keep them happy.

I use mostly bruised cereals and add a few minerals, peas, maize and even a squirt of aniseed oil at the start gets them in.
Have had the same beasts coming to them for up to 6 years which is amazing considering all the diseases it causes and that they are only attracted to shoot them in the first place.

Munti roe and fallow. They are already there, wondering why not eating from feeder although thwy been few yards away. Thx
Plenty of feed at the moment, winter will be a different ball game, put a seat near by and hammer the muntjac and any fallow bucks.
If you know they are passing what more do you want?
