The out yesterday or today thread and...

Few hours out in a boat on out local stillwater last night. Blinking freezing and a bit blowy but had a cracking session. Had 18 to the net. Well that's the catch and release limit so the number I'm sticking to  Plenty of smaller fish but a good number in the 2-4lb range and I was the only one catching, which must have been bloody frustrating for others but no one was chatty or asked what I was catching them on so I didn't feel too guilty.

Sadly lost likely the fish of a lifetime (well my lifetime anyway) - played it for about 10 mins and it kept taking line and going on screaming runs but couldn't get it to the surface. Never saw it yet but it was in a different league to anything else I've had out of there (and I've had rainbows and browns in the 5-8lb range a few times). Suspect it was a big brownie as it wanted to go deep. Thought I was getting somewhere then it went under the bloody boat and I could not turn it. I was hanging over the side with most of the rod under water trying to put some side-strain on it and turn it away from the double anchor ropes I had out to hold the boat in position in the blustery wind. Then "plink", went wrong side of the rope and snapped me. I hate losing fish with tackle in them but all barbless so hopefully the hook comes out quickly. I'd say 80% of what I got in the net the hooks fell out as soon as I let the tension go on the line so fingers crossed. Did play on my mind a bit though :(
Nice session.
Probably foul hooked the "Monster Trout" in the tail. More than likely, only a 3-pounder :rofl:

Only kidding 75, what method? Buzzers?

Granddaughter found what looked like cub poop yesterday dam it so on the ground 04:00 today and nothing!
Just a nice show of hare, rabbit, pheasant and duck. Not one cock bird gave the alarm that I could hear on this near still morning. The dawn chorus was divine.
Got home and shot a squirrel. Back in bed for 06:30.

After the heat of the last few days - i cracked on and then have had a lovely morning walking about looking at some of what we have created these last few years - Dragon flies by the dozen bombing about - birds singing their hearts out . I sat in a armchair i rescued from my deceased mentors house when it was being cleared that i now have next to a pond i dug last year - and had a real reset - Bliss

Oh and i shot 4 squirrels and was overjoyed to see a crow on one feeder i went to check - so that got it too

Brilliant day !

Come to think about the Number of Hedgehogs I’m seeing regularly..could it be that as I’m on top of the foxes ..the Hedgehogs are increasing..but there’s definitely more Hedgehogs than foxes.
In all my years of night shooting..I’ve never seen a fox attacking nor killing hedgehogs!
P.S We have No Badgers on this permission that’s for sure.

We are lucky to have a few hedgehogs around home but don't think the numbers have anything to do with how many foxes are about. Road kills and farming practices probably account for a good number unfortunately...lots not mention badgers

I bet they do you know - foxes will kill anything - even if thats just young / baby hedgehogs
We have started seeing them too since thermal came and foxes became more accessible to control

Fair point...but seem to see more hedgehogs where there are decent numbers of foxes and not many where there are decent numbers of badgers. I do appreciate that this is hardly scientific 👍

Just another point ... thermal also means we see the hedgehogs so much easier to talk numbers 👍

I got spiked when I was moving some straw earlier this year in the barn...big fat spiky hedgehog in there lol. Left some straw and the hedgehog in a large box (on its side) he was snoring away nicely :)
