On average are American shooters worse shooters than British shooters?

Having seen some very talented shooters and sadly the other kind as well this topic is painting with a broad brush. I simply can't say we are better over here than in the UK. While at least in my area there are plenty of places to practice, some do not others shoot rather a lot. I do fail to understand the concept of doing what is required to gain the FAC being incentive to becoming a good shot. We undoubtably have a larger population of shooters .

There is no nationally required standard of marksmanship for an FAC grant in the UK. Some constabularies, very approximately equivalent to US County Sheriffs, have determined their own rules for competence tbased upon being granted DSC1. The DSC1 shooting test is two shots in a 4” bull from 100m prone with bipod, two from sticks at 70m, and two finishing shots from sticks at 20m (figures illustrative and from memory). Plenty of experienced shots fail the DCS1 test. A zero test is allowed beforehand I believe. This was the part I was most concerned with when I took my DSC1… the embarrassing prospect of failing the test made it feel challenging despite it being an easy test from an expected marksmanship standard.

I wish I had a way of just going to try this that didn't require taking a day off work, booking two weeks in advance, redoing a test made up by the NRA and doing a supervised zeroing test because I'm not using lead. Because I'd love to just go and try this quickly for fun and edification.
Garlands has a pay and play one hundred yard range that you can shoot prone or from a bench. I know it's not quite in your backyard but at least it doesn't require all the fuss and palaver of the Bisley Rifle Club.

I imagine and assume Americans are very good shots compared to UK shooters, they can practice almost anywhere and for very little money. Due to greater limitations on the amount of deer they can hunt, possibly they have worse field shooting skills.

Last year while with friends in USA we were driving to the/his hunting cabin in Pennsylvania passing fields with cattle... the cows had the word 'COW' painted on their sides.
I asked why this was done, the reply astonished me.... 'Because in hunting season there are folk out there who don't know what a deer looks like & they shoot at anything moving'.
Hard to believe - but true! Apparently that's how bad American shooters can be

In certain areas (especially those close to large urban areas) this is the case. But bear in mind how much larger the US is than the UK. So, though this does happen, it is the exception, not the rule.

So no, Americans (as a whole) are not that bad of shooters.

Agreed & Definitely not in my experience. I have shooting friends in the US & they're all good shots & hunters, clearly tho', the farmers whose fields we were driving past had serious concerns.
Also, it wasn't just one field with cows, it was several. I thought it funny until I was told the reason.

You won't find our cows painted like that (maybe a number on the flank) just paddle boats (come in No 9 your time is up) also we don't have Fish and Wildlife Rangers checking tags but the "ticket inspectors" could freelance 🤣
Thank God we don't have public land which can be hunted as It would be lots of "Fenton's" the deer tracking dogs in Richmond Park

Good dog, would make a cracking deer dog with proper training

Unfortunately the shooting public are largely prohibited from shooting on public land, civil servants reserve that activity for themselves and charge the public for doing so.
