Rimfire choices

Looking at a rimfire as a daytime set up
Had a 10/22 for a bit and did not like it one bit

Currently looking at two
HW60j in 22lr. Very good condition and the trigger is sublime
My intention would be to shoot this with RWS match ammo or similar, something not subsonic

The other Choice is , My best mate RFD Ed currently has a CZ 457 in .22wmr
I’ve handles couple of these and the trigger was , let’s say, not so good

Experience of either ?
Reasons to buy one or the other ?

There’s a cracking CZ in a thumb hole stock for sale on here , but I can’t put that on my credit card

I’d probably have the HW.

I used to have a 457 and now have a 455. The 455 isn’t as refined but for some reason I like it a lot more, I found the 457 a bit bland and as you say, the trigger wasn’t great - I can’t quite say why as it wasn’t really heavy.

Buy the CZ and upgrade the trigger.

This is for a daytime set up and my budget won’t run to a Tika plus ancillaries

Just picked up a CZ 457 Range, couldn't be more impressed with it. Trigger is just fine, no need to upgrade it. Balance is right too, just by the front of the Trigger guard. And the adjustable cheek rest make lining up a doddle

.22lr non subsonic i.e full power / match ammo
Or .22 WMR

I know there’s a big power difference so,, Sub 100mtr rabbits and crows will be the main use

Hmmm.
Never found a 22 which shot hvs as accurately as subsonics. Had a .22 magnum which I really liked but if you want laser-like bunny busters get a .17 hmr or for really quiet fun a .22 for subsonics and mount a Zulus (other sights are available) on it. Putting a V1 Zulus on my .22 has utterly transformed it with CCI subs - no more holdover guesswork or heaven forbid “dialling in” wotever that is.
CZs in all 3 chambering are excellent - those poor bunnies…

The last WMR I had was a Ruger precision, which was anything but in fact .
I’ve spoken to folk since that seem to get serious accuracy with WMR so I know they aren’t all bad

If you're going to be burning through bricks on rabbits I'd definitely stick with 22lr . The 22wmr is just too spendy to be high volume shooting. Also at the ranges you're talking , on your intended quarry , what advantage is there using the wmr over the lr?

I wouldn't bother with the WMR.

I'd throw the Sako Quad and T1x into the ring. The T1x is less refined, but they're both excellent rifles, and very accurate. The T1x has far more available options, chassis etc though.

Neat thing about the Quad is you can get 22lr, 22wmr, 17hmr and 17mach2 barrels, in sport and varmint profile so if you want extra calibres you can.

Personally I've just got the one 22lr barrel on mine.

I had a similar decision recently between Cz 451/455 and Hw66j, ended up going for the weihrauch and have been extremely pleased with it. But I do want to have a look at the 457 in 17hmr. I do have a hw100 and 97k so was a bit biased though

Personally Im not a fan of the newer CZ rifles, I have a Tikka T1X on order as of right now, but reading your other reply Im not too sure what to recommend. Im no fan of anything in the Ruger/Savage/Marlin department personally. Perhaps a used T-Bolt or Sako might be in budget. Never found the triggers too bad in the brownings and I like the action for mounting optics

Always hard to argue with a CZ, the trigger is an easy fix and aftermarket support is plentiful.

Tikka's are so good, as you know from your night rig, so a used one may not be a bad call? They're almost boringly good in the way that an old VW Golf was, aren't they... may not be the absolute best at any one thing but it's genuinely good at everything.

I also quite liked the Bergara BMR (with the steel barrel, not the carbon one), decent little rifle that in my humble opinion, I'm not sure I'd pass up a CZ for one but if you like something different they're not bad and seem to be gaining a larger following than they previously had.

I see your conundrum though, we're truly spoilt these days. I'll jump on the bandwagon of not being a big magnum fan either, for whatever that's worth, but whichever way you go at least you get to enjoy shopping for a new addition and joining in the rimfire fun

I do like a WMR , the make a good bang and make crows go “Pufff!!!”
So there is that.
I’ve shot some great high velocity LR stuff as well mind .

Like I said my T1x is awesome, but has the thermal on it full time , and if I’m honest , summer daytime rabbits are not where thermal scopes shine.
