PDS1/2 Vs DSC1/2

You pays your money and takes your chance, both seem to be recognised by forestry and other agencies, aren't some training providers offering both or have jumped ship from one to the other?

The differences are £££ and the shooting test.

DMQ (for better or worse) gets you to shoot at a deer silhouette. PDS is a 6" circle.

My understanding of the two courses is that theoretical material taught is identical.

The equivalent level 2s are again just down to £££ in my opinion. Yes, PDS2 is still over multiple stalks from memory, but last time I looked into it, by god they know how to charge...

Just double checked, yes it's over 2 stalks, the £145 the website quotes for is for their "theory" part of the level 2 only...

If its all to just get a piece of paper to say you can do something, go for the one which is better for your pocket and time.

If you look at what you're paying for at the level 2... I'm calling most of it pish...

Why the hell is deer identification in the level 2??? They cover that in level 1 as well... feels like adding **** to justify the price tag...

Glad I did DSC1 since I'm moving to Ireland, they accept DSC1 as equivalent to their HCAP - They do not accept PDS1 as equivalent.

Maybe because most " qualified stalkers " ive met could really do with brushing up on deer id skills .....

I'm not sure what to make of the PDS1/2 just yet. It is a Lantra accredited course which gives it credability. Even more so given that BASC has recently agreed terms with Lantra for its own online version of the DSC1 - see here: https://www.lantra.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/docvault-pdfs/product-36118-learner.pdf - which begs the question what is the difference between the two providers? Personally, I feel BASC's decision to seek Lantra accreditation undermines its relationship with DMQ and its partners, BDS and NGO. BASC is yet to explain the rationale behind its decision to work with Lantra.

I’m a stuck record on this, but I will bite.

The DSC courses have been around decades, are the accepted norm, and the origin of the organisation that devised this qualification was as a charity. I know people involved in this, and it is my belief that the intentions were pure. It has certainly been occasionally derailed by charlatans, but hey, it’s not perfect.

PDS is the brainchild of an individual party who is interjecting himself into the ‘industry’. His background is the Capreolus club that essentially acts as a sporting agent between city boys and deerstalking outfits, in the process (by all accounts) hoovering up permissions left and right. There is already a level 3, and potentially a 4. It’s a commercial entity. They have a strong online presence which is an acquired taste. The extra courses are something some of us warned about years ago (obvious really), I believe there is plenty barriers to entry in the stalking world without the arbitrary qualifications (3 & 4).

If you like the sound of the latter, by all means go that way. I went DSC and am content with that.

I’m a professional forester of 30 years and if you come to me with PDS certificates, then I’m going to think you’re a fool. Because a fool and their money are easily parted.

I fully accept that I’m completely prejudiced against it but I am. Mainly for all the reasons JH83 outlined in post #9
