Minox binoculars - different grades?

I've been browsing on eBay for some Bins (planning ahead) and found that the Minox "HG" range are going for £500 - £1000 and the Minox "BV" range are going for £150 - £200. Is the BV range a lower grade of glass, not as well made etc?

i use the bv the glass is the same or so i have been told the hg use argon and the bv use nitrogen the twilight number is almost identical so i cant see it making any difference in that score the hg have a faster focus than the bv . i am well chuffed with mine that is until i left them on top of my van roof and drove down the road they do bounce well and still work just well scuffed and one side is chipped so i now need a new pair, atb wayne

Another BV user here. Think I paid £125 a couple of years ago off fleabay. For the money they are hard to beat - miles better than the Canon bino's they replaced.

Hi Adam, i cant tell you what the BV means, though I will say that i started with the BV minox and for the money they are good, however the HG (High grade)range use Schott glass and as you will know this is top end german quality...The Binos we used on your outing were HG Minox 8.5 x 43 which I have just sold and moved on to HG APO 8.5 x 43...If I had known you were looking for a pair you could have had mine http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co....spherical-lens-Binoculars?p=348686#post348686

Keep an eye out and dont rush In to buying anything below your expectations...A good pair at the right price will turn up...ATB...Mark

Not sure which model mine are but they are 8x42 cost about £250 and their spot on for the money i compared them to a pair of swarovski 10x42 and for the price i would nt have swapped !

Cant speak for the BV or BL models but I would expect to see a slight improvement in low light and colour rendition. I chose the german 8x43 HG's and been very pleased with them. Excellent in low light and wil take me beyond anything I could shoot through my S & B sight.
Keep an eye on Binoculars, Telescopes, Night Vision, Astronomical Telescopes, Bird Watching Binoculars - Sherwoods-Photo.com who are keenly priced but also offer ex demo models(no minox at the mo) I got a substantial saving on mine which had been at a trade fair then returned to the factory for cleaning and repackaging. Just like new.

Thanks for all the advice chaps - much appreciated :)

Mark, yes, I was looking at Minox after having tried yours as they were superb! Just wondering what the difference is and getting an idea now - I am looking at early next year to be able to afford some, so not rushing anything - just after a bit of advice. I saw yours had gone on here earlier and thought "bother, I'd tried those and know they were good" but I haven't got the cash at the moment :) I'll keep an eye on eBay, Macleods and the link from tikkamuz and as you say, the right ones will turn up at the right price

Cheers

Adam

I had the 8.5x43 HG's, wish I'd kept them to be honest, they would be a fantastic second pair to have.

They were upto my 10x42 EL's in performance....

I was the same Adam and had to build my gear up over time - it seems to take ages and if you don't have the cash and see what looks like a good deal you always feel like you've missed something. However, over time good deals come along again including when you do have the money. I bought my binos first and probably had them for 2 years or more before I bought my rifle but in the end the package came together. I have the Minox HGs and really rate them. For someone like me on a budget but also very aware of performance I think they hit just the right point on the price/performance graph and as a hobby user I could never justify £2000 or thereabouts for one of the top name makes.

I'm slowly getting there :) DSC1 hopefully in June, FAC July, Rifle November. This year I am collecting all the little bits, building up my kit which is always fun - gaiters, sticks, roe sack, boots, gloves, sleevelets, gloves for gralloch, tick twisters etc etc - it's really quite nice doing all these bits as they don't cost too much and make me feel like I'm getting somewhere!

The big saving is for the rifle in November (fingers crossed), then a scope some time in May next year and the upgraded binoculars after that. I think having read around it is probably going to be a pair of Minox HGs or Khales from Macleods. I'll keep an eye on eBay for that perfectly priced second hand pair of Swaro EL's, but won't hold my breath ;)

i have the minox HG 8.3x43 and can not fault them .they are also light .i recently bought some leica 8x56rf for the range finding and cant bring my self to sell the minox

I think the BV range is named after their value range.I have a pair of the BV 10 x 42 and are spot on for me.
Waterproof,rubber coating,compact, light and under £200.

I'm sure I'm stating the obvious but don't neglect to look at a 2nd hand scope. I bought a 2nd hand S&B 8X56 for about £250 about a year before I actually had a rifle to put it on. It has stood me in good stead ever since and with the rising value of scopes I could probably sell it for at least what I paid for it. I'd love a variable scope etc. but in the end I've never actually NEEDED one and I've shot deer from 20 yards to about 230 yards so buying the best quality glass you can justify and ignoring the more fancy "feature set" has certainly worked for me.

Yeah, from what I have been reading on here a lot of folks buy the more expensive variable scope and end up using it on one magnification all the time, usually between 6x and 8x - I am keeping an eye on Macleods list for a nice fixed mag Swaro second hand - should be about £600-£900 and will mean I have really top notch glass for not too much money. Got to get saving so I can hopefully have my set up ready for next years Roe Bucks :)

Around £500 will buy you a new 8X56 or 6X42 S&B, the 8X56 Swaro would take you over £800 but even so those are within your budget new, however I would recommend buying 2nd hand and spending what you save on stalking :-)

Out of interest myself and a few others compared the S&B to the Swaro 8X56 and we were all agreed that they could both resolve the same detail as the light faded but the image through the swaro looked better because, we thought, of the slightly wider field of view. If your heart is set on the swaro then my advice is to buy a swaro but if you are not dead set on one then it would at least be worth comparing the swaro to the S&B just on the basis that the S&B is less expensive to buy and will probably not lose you a single shot when compared to the swaro.

For your £900 you could have a 2nd hand S&B 8X56, a pair of Minox HGs and a day or two at roe does with the knowledge that you have the best kit money can buy.

I have been running 15x56 Minox for when i am in big wide gully country and all I can say is "they are pretty bloody good"

I am so impressed with my BV 10*42's, I think they were about £100, in fact, I prefer them to zeiss dialyt 7x42's due to weight and similar optics and waterproofing - and yes, I compare side by side in my comments, from woodland to hill, but ok, in almost darkness, the zeiss are a bit clearer.

like I said, I'm so impressed I'm buying a 3-15X43 ZA with BCD for my 30-06 instead of a zeiss or a schmidt or a swaro - and only about $400 too.

I bought a pair of Minox BF 10x25 BR, they are very compact, and waterproof. They are to keep in the car, my last pair of Hawke's are in a car park somewhere in Cornwall. Anyway, I am very pleased with them for £79 from Clifton Cameras. Better quality, waterproof than the hawke's for the same money. Very good in full daylight, but obviousely not as good in low light.
