We are becoming just to lazy, and it is after all meant to be the home of the English language we should be ashamed.

Why that comment Widows Son? Baguio isn't the only person who thinks that, I do too, as, I'm sure, do others.

Well then you'll require a life also, as I have posted on more than one occasion, this site is about Deer Stalking not English composition or grammer, there are many on the site from the United States of America, same language different spelling issues, why because there heads are not up there arse .

Actually it was when there were great influxes of people moving into the USA the education standards and the immigration staffs knowledge of spelling, spelt things as they sounded here grew US English .

As many on here were are Deer Stalkers, Forestry workers, Construction workers, HM Forces and a variance of other types of people, we don't all shine seats with our arse, have Degrees or have sat and wrote a dissertation ,or would have the knowledge or interest to .

I hope your happy with your answer.

Look at your own quote, you are not that clever (do others )? Others do .We can all pick faults or holes on everything that people do ,it isn't always correct or clever ,go back to the 50s and 60s education was not as prevalent in its teaching as it is now ,there lies part of your problem in those days, if you didn't show interest or didn't have the ability, you were left wondering, what are they talking about in class rooms .

Well said that man!!!!!

Spelling and grammar are but one aspect of communication skills. Poor spelling can indeed unwarrantedly disadvantage an individual and cause a pedantic employer to miss the opportunity to employ an otherwise excellent person. I have someone very dear to me and he cannot spell for toffee. This was due to unidentifed poor eyesight in his early years and abject failure in providing remedial help. He is a superb professional with skills that have earned the respect and gratitude of many. So remember not to see the speck in your brother's eye whilst failing to see the plank in one's own. Alternately 'judge not that ye be not judged'.
Is spelling really that important, when seen in the round ?
We need to draw a line under this thread before it degenerates futher.

I am ex army(and hve the medals to prove that I can be a 'dumbass'). Currently, and for the previous 15 years, I have been employed as a truck driver, and NOT a 'shinyass'. I am able to make use of colloquial (everyday) English, with pretty much anyone.

I had, and have no wish, nor intention to seem condescending; I DO however maintain a sense of pride in being able, with only a small amount of effort, to use MY OWN language correctly, as, I believe, should everyone.

Perhaps, if this attitude were to be instilled in schools, the current fuss over this years GCSE English exam failures would never have arisen.

Regardless of the way lessons were taught in the fifties and sixties, the correct use of grammar would have been picked up naturally, via the radio programs of the time, due to the broadcasting policies of the B.B.C.

I have no issues with foreigners making mistakes with English, I speak and read German, but due to the rather different rules of German grammar, frequently make mistakes in that language, which, if pointed out to me, I try not to replicate.

Online spellcheckers are all well and good, BUT, as I said, the ability to use (and abuse if required) your own language should be seen as something to be proud of, rather than something to dismissed out of hand, or even as something to be villified.
Here is the news, And this is Alvar Lidell reading it, Absolutely beautiful!

Uncle Norm, we all make mistakes as we're all human. But to name call those who haven't (post 19) is akin to bullying the bright kid at school when we were too immature to know any better. Like teabag say's, once he is picked up for making a mistake he tries to rectify that error in the future just like most do with anything they do in life. So therefore, why would anyone continue to deliberately spell words wrong when it's pointed out to them that it's wrong? There is no benefit in that is there? Like you have pointed out, doing the job well is one thing but if you can't get the job to start with you're stuffed. Surely that's reason enough to write to the best of your best ability isn't it?

I'm not sure what this means WS, and this illustrates the problem we all have with poor expression of ideas. We're social animals, so need to understand one another. I'm not being punctilious or prissy here. I was taught English in the 50's and 60's, and the standard then was higher than it is now.

Maybe it's down to the use of phonetics in more recent teaching, but a lot of people younger than I am just cannot translate speech into written language. If it sounds the same they use whatever word comes to hand .... their - there - they're.... as the man said. The difference between possessive pronouns, prepositions, and the use of personal pronouns with verbs was hammered into me. It was all learning by rote and recital, and deadly dull it was too. But it was a disciplined way of learning exactly how to convey your meaning.

So why should we put up with 'undisciplined' communications from others when we try to abide by the rules? Okay, that's a bit over the top way of putting it, but I'm irritated when I'm expected to struggle to understand something by someone who doesn't think this matters. I want to hear his argument, and not have to sit with my finger in my mouth parsing each line trying to work out exactly what he's trying to say. So I think reasonable English does matter in all forms of discourse. A spellchecker won't help anyone one bit if they can't string words together into a coherent sentence. Nor will it help anyone with dyslexia because they're too far gone to make use of it.

OK enough, this is a stalking forum where people come to discuss, debate and in general share their passion for stalking and all related matters. It is not a place to highlight the spelling or grammar failings in others. It may be well for those pointing out these shortcomings to consider just what effect their ill considered remarks may have on the people in question. As in all aspects of life there are areas where improvement could be made if people tried a little harder but there are also instances where people are trying their best and it still falls short of the level expected b some people. To these people I say get a life, be a little more concerned about the people involved as opposed to their transgressions which seem to make life unbearable for you. If you find it such an affront to your sensibilities then may I suggest that you do not bother to come onto the site, this is a deer stalking site, not one for vociferous pedants to exercise their genius, it will not be tolerated.

Move on, and try to contain yourselves to relevant material.

+1 I have to agree John. Makes one wonder how many are stalkers and how many are talkers on here at times !

I asked a question and waited patiently.

No less than two of the site proprietors have now contributed, both in the same vain, both using the old "do you really stalk? or, do you just talk?" line.

I know for a fact that neither of these men, much as I admire them, have spent there entire professional lives (up till relatively recently) stalking. For my part I have lived, worked and played in the countryside all of my fifty three years bar three... when I was at Edinburgh University (studying Agriculture) and during that time I saw even more of Scotland and France, in more intimate detail, than most folk will in a lifetime. So, I'll simply not be questioned on my authenticity. I live a country life each and every day and I certainly don't just "play" at it or just "talk" about it. Not offended here either, just clarifying.

My real question that remains unanswered is, how come I logged onto the Stallking Directory to be greeted by a pop-up offer of a spellcheck facilty? Now, I am fairly computer naive, I will grant you that, but I had already done my emails and visited other websites on work related matters and it was only after doing that and then logging on to the SD that my spellcheck pop-up made it's appearance. Can the reason why that happened be explained to me please?

Do you have a spellcheck plugin in your browser? Or malware on your PC perhaps?

Where did this 'spellcheck' actually download from? What's it called? It certainly isn't anything to do with our site, the forum software does not have a spell checker.

regards,

3rd of 3 'proprietors'

Tom,
I have just re -read my post and am unable to find the "do you really stalk? or, do you just talk?" line. I was making no reference to your spellchecker enquiry I was making reference to the posts that relate to the varying degrees of peoples skill with the English language, and trying to point out what I consider to be arrogant observations.

You're right, it was my inference compounded by Sikamalc's comments, which I took as confirmation.

Actually I sympathise with the main thrust of your post. My son is dyslexic and avoids the written word like the plague. His coping mechanism is that he has developed something close to an eidetic memory (which we often test and rarely find lacking in any detail) his spatial awareness and mental agility with three dimensional diagramatic representations make him a constant point of reference with the architects, designers, draftsmen and skilled workers that he spends his professional life amongst. We are NOT all born equal. Nor is the apparent lack of one talent any indicator of the hidden depths people might possess. However, when you prick us we do indeed all bleed. So, your wise counsel... to consider the feelings of others... is a point well made. Sorry, for condensing my response and aiming it at both of you when I should have been more selective in my address.

And to the point at issue: Alex a simple pop-up appeared offering me an ie.spellcheck "add-on" for my browser. I didn't actually download in the end because when I tabbed on the "more info" button I was taken to a website that meant nothing to me. My Norton security programme raised no concern and my computer assures me that it is currently virus free, following a scan I left it to perform this morning.

Other than this ... I know naathing! View attachment 19263

let me educate you somewhat,

i have been stalking as as semi professional for a long time. Held many leases, and undertaken some large culls. I have also taken two of the big five of Africa and hunted most of the plains game. Well over 30 years in the game and paid for all my leases, and run them well. Many in the highlands and still running one now after 9 years.

I am quite frankly fed up with people like you on here who seen to have nothing else better to do than crack on about other peoples short comings. So before making any suggestion in any way shape or form about what I have done and who I am, wind your neck in, because you do not know me. And never will either, theres a good laddy!!

Spelling mistakes, we all do it, so what, does it really matter in the end.
I tend to spell check my posts as it is built in to the mac so is easy to use.
The worst part though, usually when i'm tired or in a hurry is I quote someone
and spell check and correct the quote as well, usually only realising once posted

If I have done that to you, sorry

Neil. :)
