irish setter boots

I don't have those boots, but I do have the Mitchell.

I love them, the grip isn't the best for hunting as they are not too grippy, but I wear them all the time in winter, they are warm, waterproof, supportive around the ankle and I am looking at having them resoled soon.

It's mad that it's cheaper to get them from Cabelas.

Thanks dougster, how do they come up size wise? I'm pleased to see they cater for skinny feet, and offer two widths, still thinking of the model I linked to, which aren't available on cabelas' website so I'll be forking out for the uk prices!

many thanks......

Had a set about eight years ago and loved them. I doubt that you'll be disappointed.
Thanks
Paul

DS,

Conversely, I've just had an American friend over from South Dakota with a pair of Irish Setters. They weren't the model that you've provided the link to but he complained of them leaking from day one of his trip here. I believe they have some decent amounts of snow in SD but it seems it doesn't get as wet there as it does in Scotland since he said in the 5 years he's had them they had never let in water before.

Kind regards,

Tim

They are good boots but built to a price and excellent for the average walk about, however one 10 day trip into NZ`s back country sorted them out for me and they leaked after that,WP socks solved that problem though.

So he has had the boots for 5 years, without a problem, they leak in year six and this is an issue!? :???: I would be happy getting three or four years from a pair, I think snow is underrated as to how damaging it can be on leather, I find boots suffer badly when I've experienced heavy snow in the past, so that could explain his issues......Personally for me, you've added to my confidence in them I suspect. All feedback is very much appreciated! Thanks all.

DS,

You've mis-understood. The point I was trying to make is that he was extremely surprised at how wet the conditions were and although he gets plenty of 'proper' snow (he even has a snow mobile to cope) it doesn't get as wet in SD as it does in Scotland. When he subjected the boots to the Scottish conditions they leaked straight away. Who knows but they could have leaked from day one if he'd subjected them to similar conditions at home as he experienced during his stay here. He was using the boots the week previous to his visit without incident. Although I'm only referencing a single pair of boots it could be that they are simply not designed for extremely wet conditions.

Regards,

Tim

Sorry Tim, I didn't really misunderstand, I got what you were saying, but I was kind of saying that any hard conditions for 5 years is bound to take its toll, whether its snow or wet, and if they lasted anywhere near that I would be happy. All feedback is gratefully received , sorry if you thought I was being sarcastic,
all the best

Andy

Thanks mongoose, I've read mixed reviews about them, although most issues seemed to be from older products and may well be sorted by now, fingers crossed! Think I'm going to be ordering some Irish setters, vast majority of opinions seems positive.......here's hoping!

One of the shops in the city sells Irish Setter boots. Made in the Far East and no better than any others from what I can see.

I have finally decided that I am having a custom pair made for me from this outfit;
Sportsmen's Footwear Since 1898 - Hunting Boots, Outdoor Gear, Custom Made Boots, Hunt Boot, Hunters Boot, Hiking Boot, Tracking Boots

Six Hundred Dollars, custom made to my feet. Better than spending $250 on Indonesian junk every three years. JMHO~Muir

Let us know what they are like when you get them in 5 months.

I've got a pair of Irish Setter boots - warm, comfy, keep my feet dry....and a fraction of the price of similar boots (I ordered mine from Cabelas). I was so pleased, that I ordered another pair in a Cabelas' sale to keep in the loft for when - at some point - my current pair give up the ghost.

Thumbs up from me.

If it took much less time than that 'd be suspicious, wouldn't you?? I can tell you what a store bought pair of boots will be like: Uncomfortable. My right and left foot are different sizes. Everything I buy is a compromise.~Muir

I had a (long since passed on) uncle in Scotland who also had different sized feet.

Rather than continuing to buy specially made (expensive) shoes he put an advert in the (London) Times newspaper stating "Gentleman with size 8 right foot and size 5 left foot wishes to meet gentleman with size 5 right foot and size 8 left foot. Object: Shoe buying!". He found a guy in (IIRC) Surrey that fitted the bill and they would buy each buy a pair of shoes of mutually agreed style and colour (one pair 8's and one pair of 5's) from national retailers and post each other the required sized single shoe!

Must be someone matching in the US Muir out of 310 million?

http://www.blackislander.co.uk/catalogue/blackislander-scratchless-10-high-leg-boot.htmI've just got a pair of black islanders they look and feel awesome and look like they will stand up to most conditions better than others I've had in the past but only time will tell hey but they certainly look the bees knees
I'm well tempted to order a pair of these - how do they run size wise? I'm normally 12 UK but for hiking boots like Lowa or Altberg I need 13 or more.
Also are they a wide or narrow fitting? Thanks.

They also have them on swillingtons website, so not quite as exclusive as blackislander make out! I think they are £10 or so cheaper too!

I got a friend to bring a couple of pairs of Irish Setter 882's back from the states for me. Unfortunately neither of the sizes I ordered fitted (can't remember whether they came up big or small now) so didn't actually use them but in terms of quality they are not as well made as the Altbergs velthogs I had to compare them too. The leather in particular is just not as heavy.

Zamberlan are worth a look too, I have a pair of high leg oregons but the Sella has since come out and would of probably gone for those.

There may be! Hadn't thought about that but in truth, the size difference is just enough to make one bot loose. I have compensated using extra socks but over a full day of crawling up and down canyons this 'patch' breaks down. Lack of support makes my foot and ankle sore. My alternative has always been to buy boots sized to the smaller foot and then wear them in. Unfortunately, this causes one boot to hurt like heck for a while before the stitching finally gives out.

I'm old. A custom pair of boots relegated to hunting will probably last the rest of my hunting career.~Muir
