One rifle or several

Yes, just having one rifle means you get to know it. But what's the fun in that. 22rf, 243 and a 7mm or 30 calibre seems to work as a good mix all round. If you are shooting abroad, take the 243 up to 7mm and take the big rifle up to 375h&h.

.22lr, .223 rem, 6mm rem, 7mm rem mag.
What more could anybody want, .223 for fox and small deer. 6mm for fox and all deer, 7mm mag because I can.lol

When I said you can only shoot one rifle at a time so why have more I meant have one rifle for each discipline.

For example I have
.243 for deer and fox.

Will be getting a 30-06 for boar and a 375 H and H for dangerous game.

All will be the same rifles so I am used to the same action and movement.

so do you do when your said discipline rifle breaks down
Because they do for some reason or another

What hav you got as a back up..???

i hav .222 fox and legal deer
.243 fox and deer
.270 & 30-06 for Scotland and larger deer/boar/abroad
Also a few others just incase
when you walk out the door you want the comfort zone of being able to take a rifle for a walk for any occasion as and when it arises

the 7mm mag is my back up stone, but draw the line at shooting squirrels with it mate:shock:.

I like to have several rifles. I'm as much a collector as a shooter to be honest but 99% of what I do happens with my 7x57R/12g combi gun. I can shoot anything I like with that and I'm never without a suitable gun. Everything I have has a slightly different use - I don't usually take the combi foxing or bunny bashing. I do need to cut my numbers a bit but for now I have...

.22lr x2
.17 Hornet
.223
7-08
7x57/12g
.338 Win Mag

The only ones I'd be without if I had to be would be one of the .22's, the .223 and the .338. I like and use them all but the .338 kicks more than a roe rifle needs to!

I do think that just shooting one rifle means that you become finely tuned to that particular rifle and therefore are potentially able to extract more accuracy from it. I have to use a different rifle for work to when I do recreational stalking. the work rifle has a standard factory trigger and my own rifles have Jewel triggers. It does take a few dry fire practice sessions to get used to the different feel when I swap from one to the other. Deciding on having 1 or more rifles all depends on personal circumstances. I have 2 personal rifles legal for culling all UK species of deer. I think I would NOT like to rely on 1 rifle because of the simple fact if you need any work done on rifles it means that you could be without a rifle for a long time.

well i used to have this lot,

.22lr x 2, 1 with nv, have since sold both,
.17hmr x 1 still have a Farley new one.
.223 x 2 sold 1 and gave one to a mate who was more broke than me at the time.moved to 20 tac and on my second one now.
.234 x 1 had a few now and a 6mmbr, just the one left.
.270 x 1 sold it on as it was pants.(ie: not for me)
.308 x 1 had about 5 of these bad boys most for range work and 2 for fox and deer, sold on when i needed funds.

so now left with.

17 hmr number 5 since i started using them and loved them all
20 tac number 2 and its the best cal i have had for a long time.
243, my number 3 in this cal, this is by far the best one yet as it shoots like i want too.

if i could keep them then i would but thats not going to happen, so i will end up with just the 17 and a 12 bore skeet. or ill just have to sell the lot and leave shooting all together.

I did own 15+ rifles, but have decided over the last month or so to massively downsize to just three - .22 Sako Finnfire Range, .308 AIAE MKIII & TRG 42.

Partly because I'm moving into a different career where I won't need to carry my own guns for work everyday. However mostly because I like the idea of having three totally dependable rifles, that are completely setup for me & which will cover everything from rabbits to bear.

I have a few calibres , quite a few rifles and have owned and sold on a lot more over the years ,pretty much settled on my main 'working' calibres but still change the rifles occasionally , i also try a 'new' ( to me ) calibre from time to time , i do this because it interests me - not searching for 'the one' .I sometimes consider reducing my collection but know i would end up regretting it and starting over again , i can also see the possible benefit of only one / two rifles which you don't change , but overall i think that practicing regularly with any rifle is the key.

+1 ^^

Well bobjs, for what its worth I wouldnt bother giving up because you will only want to start again.

well if you can find someone who wants one of my kidneys for 4k then drop me a line.

its not coz i want too stop, its coz i need to, to pay bills,

I can second the combination option - not much a 16 / 7x65r cannot take either, and just a nice package. Only issue is it has a bit too much drop on the stock for it to be comfortable shooting prone.

I am not sure it's so much a question of calibre, more style of rifle that important. I could easily justify re barrelling my 243 to something a bit bigger -260, 7-08 etc to give me a slightly better hill rifle, although 243 works fine on hinds.

Sort of only have the one rifle now for deer and fox although i run two barrels,30.06 as my general walking stalking and 7mm rem mag set up for longer range work in areas where i need to sit and wait on the other side of a valley to keep the deer count down, just works great,my only other rifle is .17hmr for rabbits and thinking of moving that on for a .204 ruger barrel for the same gun for that too, nice having one stock that suits me really well.

Here in the high country there is an old saying "Horses for courses". You dont go hunting big game with a .22 lr using winchester Z's. Light game 22 lr Deer, 270 to 308 using various loads depending on conditions and
breed

As back up I believe a 12 Gauge 20" under & over loaded with a solid & AAA just about covers it.

"Muir would know" His mob invented the solid 12 gauge to stop the moonlighters. One shot through the radiator would stop them in their tracks with a severe electrical problem.!! The con rod would punch through the side
of the engine and knock the starter motor clean off the block.

In my case I have only 5 guns in my safe 2, 22Lr, 1 12 Gauge under & over with 20" barrel and V sights. and 2 Parker Hales Custom No1 and a Custom No 4 Both 303 British. Lastly a Mauser Model 71 Wall hanger needing a new Stock, "Simon, Have u got that new CNC machine yet???"

I would love to own more, However my wish list is long and the Dollars are short I am happy with what I have.

"Jimbo" How did you like your Parker hale Custom No 1.

PS I believe all rifles are different to use, variety makes you a better Rifleman, don't blink until you see the dust of the strike.

Nice to have a few rifles as you've always got a back up when one's in the shop or awaiting variation.

7-08 is supposed to be a great round, and very nearly bought one myself, but due to finances etc went for a 308 in addition to my .243 in the end as getting ammo & reloading equipment/brass/etc for the 7mm-08 was a total ball ache.

I've got a 308 on the way, as well as a .243, 22lr, 17hmr, air rifle, 410, 12g, 20g all squeezed in my cabinet :D... aren't many scenario's I can't cover with what I have!
