Leica Warranty

The damage was a loss of the cover at the end of the central barrel during normal use. I believe they have replaced them with a new pair, although I have not opened the package yet as am away from home at the moment.

Why does this matter? If they are Leica, wherever they are bought matters not a jot.

As has been said previously, provided there is a legitimate failure of some sort due to manufacturing defect the warranty is valid. If however the problem is damage through normal wear & tear, no warranty applies and any repair may be chargeable at the manufacturers discretion. ATB

It will then come down to what Lieca interpret as normal use deer stalkers use the bins in different ways. Some go out once or twice a month and will no doubt put no real strain on any binoculars. Then there are the ones that will be out in all weathers many times a week they will test them. They still work fine if Lieca don't fix them then i will just use them as is and source a new set of bins from a different top end binocular manufacture. I have at the moment a set of 8 x 40 slc,s been offered these for 400 and i must admit to them being really good. That would be a lot cheaper than £800 for a repair.

Did they give a reason why they would not honour their lifetime warranty Davy!!

Where does this lifetime warranty come from? Some years ago it may have been 30 years, which was 5 years parts and labour, 25 years parts (internal), now it's 10 years.

My little 8x20s need repairing. Sent to Leica via main Leica Dealer in Manchester. Returned to him 2 months later unrepaired, no explanation with a request for £50 'handling' charge. I think even the dealer was surprised, although I had warned him that this might happen after I had read similar tales of woe form other Leica owners. I've got a 'lifetime guarantee' for god's sake, and thats what the dealer told me as well when I sent them to him. They are taking the pi55. Swarowzki are brilliant to deal with.
I've been told Leica have little interest in after market servicing of binos, and are concentrating on their cameras.
I don't think they even provide spares for independent repairers to do the job. I'm missing the little 8x20s, they went with me everywhere.

Maybe K's just been lucky as with hindsight I've either a; - had a UK Leica contact in Mayfair to deal with or b; - communicated direct with the Repair Department in Germany via an old fashion hard-hitting letter.

Before that I've dropped into their UK base in what I think was Milton Keynes to pursue a request.

Made a second call to Edgars yesterday, (as might have been expected), A more informed fella said that as they had only been dealing with Leica for a short time , they had no spares capacity, & directed me to the Mayfair people, & they seemed more helpful, ... I retire to await any further developments.

Had my 12 year old leica Binoculars repaired FOC by Leica Milton Keynes and they replaced the rubber armour covering all free of charge. No complaints at all.

Can confirm that the replacement binos are brand new pair of the same spec but the latest model. Fantastic service.

Well chuffed!, just got back home, a packet awaited on the kitchen work top, within the packet, a pair of objective lens covers & more importantly, a pair of ocular end twisty bits!

This is the Guy that fixed it for me! (No relation to you know who either thank you!!!)

Hi 6Pointer, wouldn't be at all pleased with Leica. Try Viking Optical in Glasgow, they repair most makes of binos to a very high standard at sensible prices. From the initial phone enquiry to the return of the binos they were absolutely first class.

Leica seem to have several entities (not sure about the Edgar Brothers bit earlier, never heard of them being a distributor, they may be a retailer)
my experience has been very good so far, all bits and bobs free no questions asked

I am finding more examples of manufacturers wriggling out of repairs and apportioning very large bills for very small jobs though
(my S&B scope for example!!)

i always find a gentle push back usually gets you somewhere but otherwise you are left the option of voting with your feet!

Leica will repair if your bins are new and within the first five year after that its replace cheap sections eyecups covers etc but no repairs for damage .The diopter wheel truth is they didn't have the part.
I contacted Leica UK to see if they could soarse me the wheel and they did not even bother with a reply.
So while leica are very good when they are working and there glass is the best there warranty must be viewed as only a short term warranty.
Life time never.

try hawkins in northampton david there used to do all lieca in this country they still have spares and do a good job at the right money i had my pair done by them they had double vision and needed a strip and clean i think it was about 38 quid all in . if you send me details i will pop in and get you a price . could pick them up on one of my trips up north if needed hope this helps

i had a similar experience with one of the other big foreign optics companies but i didn't take no for an answer and threatened legal action, in the end we split the repair bill and they were very helpful when i went to purchase a new pair some time later.

Frank the repair bill in half would be 400 notes mate the bins in my opinion are worth about 400 notes so its a no brainer. I will keep and use them and make sure when i buy bins i don't take in the hype that they have a lifetime warranty. Thanks for the post and i did consider but decided to bow out and let leica win this one lol.

Leica good glass but no extended warranty as promised .
