What kind of Gin should I be drinking?

Interesting stuff... We don't usually find a giant selection of Gin over here... I have tried Tanqueray, Gordons, Blue Saphire, Beefeater, and the local stuff Seagrams...and actually the Segrams 90 proof is pretty good... the Gordon's we have here is 40%/80 proof and is cheap compared to most of the other gins on the shelf, its not bad. My palate is not very high class so most any of it will do for me...but it is very interesting to see that there are a lot of different gins out there...

Very good Easter Holiday thread !

My votes :
Jonge Jenever, Plymouth, Tanqueray

Bombay Sapphire is for girls, owned by Bacardi it's about as palatable as their excuse for rum, but that's just me. Had a date once with a Dutch Australian Jewish Batavian piano-playing milkmaid, she was a vet, drank Bombay Sapphire, and was very uptight !

Mine's a large one. Happy Easter.

=zeeriverrat1;773091]Well, I have an affinity for gin....you fellas should be experts on that subject! What do you prefer? It might surprise you to know that there is a gin distillery in Arkansas...:D
Curious to know what you Brits like in the way of Gin.....:suss:

Don't drink gin, prefer a whisky? No such thing as a bad whisky just some taste better than others.

Cheers Aye

you have clearly never tried the crap the Japanese try to pass off as Whisky!
they even resorted to naming a town "Scotland" and buying up some distilleries over here in order to put a dent in the Scotch Whisky market

Depending on how your gin sampling ans scoring goes, you might want to try some damson, plum and sloe gin. I always have a bottle tucked away for winter time, but it looks like the wife has taken quite a liking to plum gin - clearly demonstrated by the empty bottle on the side board after friends came over for dinner last weekend!

Can't believe no-one's mentioned it, but I guess it just means I'm a bigger tart than the rest of you - Adnams Gin, distilled in Southwold, Suffolk is unique for the strength of its botanicals and exceptional in every respect.

If you can get it try a small batch New Zealand gin called lighthouse, they do a standard and a super strength, it's very mellow, i found the super strength to strong for my tastes, i buy it straight from the importers Black Dog Wines in the uk but am sure they sell it to the US, if it's not available then Bombay Sapphire, a friend and I used to run a system where if we found a new type we would buy two bottles and then compare tasting, unfortunately after a particular heavy night he can no longer drink it, the plus side he gave me his collection.

Personally I prefer Gordons and Scwheppes (full fat not slimline) although at Game Fair last year I tried Hendricks and Feverfew which really hit the spot. Also does any one drink pinkgin any more. Tried it occasionally but it doesn't do much for me.

If you want to try something a bit different but still recognisably gin-like, I can very strongly recommend Dutch corenwyn.

It's essntially the ancestral spirit that the dutch developed in the 1700s, from which British gin evolved.

It's smoother and more honeyed - in blind tastings, people can mistake it for a Speyside whisky. But it has the botanicals - especially juniper - characteristic of gin.

Lovely as a sipping drink on it's own (particularly the Bols 10 yr old), or as part of a g&t.

Hear hear - Hoppe's Jonge for me

+1 for Dutch gin.

Tip.. if you get talking to barman or restaurant owner in Amsterdam they will take it for granted that being English you will put tonic in.

1. I put them right that I am not English.
2. Tell them no way tonic in, it's far too good to waste.
3. Enjoy a free tasting session and discussion on the merits.

Happened twice to me, different places obviously.

:)

As above.

I've had similar experiences - although Jonge Genever is nice with tonic, it's a damned shame to spoil it. I aways have a litre bottle next to the Stoli Vodka in my freezer.

Mmmm ... ... ... I'm going to pour one right now, Cheers!
