Following on from the successful event of 2013, South Lanarkshire Deer Group (SLDG) is hosting a day aimed at those individuals wishing to increase their knowledge and understanding of urban deer, including their welfare and management. The day will be divided into two parts:

1) Morning session, held indoors, where a number of speakers will discuss a variety of subjects concerning
the study, welfare and management of deer in urban and peri-urban environments. We anticipate that
speakers will include:

  • Richard Cooke, Chairman, Lowland Deer Network Scotland
  • Professor Rory Putman, Visiting Professor, Glasgow University
  • Ben Harrower, Wildlife Ranger Manager, Forestry Commission Scotland
  • Andrew Treadaway, Forestry Lecturer, SRUC Barony
  • Professor James W Simpson, Veterinary Surgeon and Deer Manager
  • David Quarrell, Chairman, SLDG; Author, Urban Deer and their Control

2) An afternoon session, held on a nearby farm, which will focus on best practice in urban deer
management, including the safe use of portable high seats, lone working, risk assessments, the
processing of venison, etc. For suitably qualified attendees, there will also be the opportunity to practice
shooting at targets that meet the current urban deer assessment standard promoted by the SLDG and in
accordance with Best Practice.
