Hi all.

Basically I am the Chairman of the Harper Adams Fieldsports Society. We have a several keen deerstalkers amongst us and we are looking at the possibility of trying to arrange to do the DSC1 together. Due to the time it takes is there anywhere in the west midlands that does a weekend course or is it possible to do the course in a single day?

Thank you

BDS do a education package which you can then follow with assessment only (5 modules) which can be done over a weekend.
£185 for the lot!

Thanks for the information.

Is there any private instructors who do DSC1 courses in the Cheshire / shropshire / Staffordshire area?

It looks like the student loan is going to be stretched a fair bit!!!!

Yes there are. I can think of two who may be able to help you out, both are very good. I will dig out their details and send them to you by pm later today.

Surely Harper will let you have a room for the weekend and use of the shooting ground to do your Level 1 over a Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Hopefully with no venue costs one of the providers will give you a deal. Don't try and scrimp on it, time spent getting basics right is time well spent. I would talk to BDS, Jelen, whoever and see what can be done.

Didn't think of bringing an instructor to Harpers. Something to look into.

Our assessor and myself do training anywhere and were down at Gap 180 last weekend with 12 lads all passing. DSC1 can be done in a day but it usually ends up a long day with the shooting taking an average of 20 minutes a man. Two days is much more relaxed but having said that if there's a good bit of commitment from the guys doing it with lots of pre-course revision we can do half a days training and preparation and assess on the afternoon. The revision materials can be provided at no cost from us. We've done that for deer management groups in the past.

The price per man depends on the numbers doing it but for a one day job it would be a fair bit less that a full course price for sure. All you need is a venue like front room or hut with power and space and somewhere safe to do the shooting test. It's easy done!

I did it in 1 day with jelen, assessment only. Very straightforward, written tests in morning, shooting and safety in a field in the afternoon. Jelen even gave an interactive cd to learn all the answers from before the day. Its not very difficult, if your shooting deer already you should know most of the answers.

I had to lend a few people my r93 to take the shooting test, mikes sako broke on the day!

There is no doubt in my mind that all module tests may be taken and passed in one day but only if the candidates have spent at least a few weeks studying the syllabus. Unless you've a photograph memory of course.

Don't under estimate the importance of squaring away in advance the shooting test and that begs to be given a trial run before and not on the day! The confidence a run through the day before just to be certain both kit and shooter are firing on all eight cylinders is a good move too and especially if you've shot each position successfully at 100 yards rather than moving forward as you will on the day of test. That's a tip I think!

What you cannot but lose out on in a single day 'crammer' approach compared to the BDS three-day offering (unnecessarily long by a day I might add where the range is walking distance from Classroom) is what you take from the insight provided by the teachers.

I agree with this advice;)
Done my DSC1 with the BASC over 4 days and thoroughly enjoyed it - if you are already quite experienced then perhaps a shorter training , but personally glad i done mine over the 4 days with the 3 months of studying and a couple of years of stalking experience with other stalkers;)
The certificate lasts you a lifetime so no point in rushing it!!!

A big thing in your favor is you're still students, so all learning regularly. Enough work before hand and as said before an assessment day would cover it. I personally would try for the two day course as there was a lot that Paul (I would recommend him and Andrew in a heartbeat) passed on that was very useful but as he said not in the DSC1 syllabus, a condensed course would potentially miss these bits out.

The advice to practice the positional shooting is very good, a few people will have only shot from high seats or standing off sticks, its much less stressful to demonstrate something you know you can do than prove to yourself you can do it with an examiner watching.

Hi,I did mine with BASC in one day up near Clithero with 8-9 others. Just read the manuall for a few weeks and practiced the shooting test.

We had a similar quandary and called the BASC deer dept. They organised to do a bespoke course for us at our venue and time of choosing.
